I forgot about that. My brother bought 100 beautiful acres in West Virginia when he was just in his mid twenties.I didn't mention it above, but it's often pointed out that the "decade" in question started to decline due to the "stagflation" that snowballed from 1973 on. I'm sure the ripples of that contributed to low rural property values that continued through the rest of the decade. It would have been just one of the factors that made it feasible for some young people to rent, lease, or acquire land during the 1970s.
Yes! That was something I avidly read about, but didn't get to experience. Remember the Foxfire books telling us all how to do things like build log cabins?I became involved in something that was going on west of the Rockies. Mainly from midway up the Pacific coast of California, up through Oregon and Washington state, and up into British Columbia (BC). It was the so-called back-to-the-land trend. In BC, where I live, it occurred along the Pacific coast, over in the Gulf Islands (off the mainland), and in the southeast corner of the province. In the U.S. it also occurred in New England states.
Can't say, too political. What does it say on the bumper sticker that has you worried @Della?
Wore the clothes. Liked them. Used the drugs. Loved them. Was too political to be a full time hippie. The War in Vietnam was my main focus. Hated it and needed to be very active and involved. I learned a lot. Perhaps too much.

Moccasin boots and leather sandals usually for footwear. Didn't see too many athletic shoes back then
I always say the Sixties were from 1965-1975.the hippy movement was actually the 60's in the UK..by the time we got to the 70's we'd moved on f
There's always what knowledge one acquires about things from reading, but it's difficult to know with confidence how these trends come and go in other regions. From my reading, I think the back-to-the-land trend got a slow start by around 1969. It contnued in my region until maybe the early 1980s. But there was a shuffle of people, some going back to the cities in the 1980s, and a few coming out from the cities during the '80s.I always say the Sixties were from 1965-1975.
You raised an extremely important point about land @JBR. Extremely. Can't say why or some dork out there would mistakenly call me a commie Red.
Mein Dumbkopf. I'm sorry. I forgot. I know, hard to believe. I forgot. Old woman honestly forgot. This is a senior forum. Let that be a lesson. Can't say, too political.
