Was that movie called "Ben is back"?
If it is, I also saw it. It was pretty dark.

I confess I was touched too and yet I couldn't help wince to see Shirley M. portray Elsa as someone willing to lie floridly and whose influence and value stemmed from her value to a man. But accepting that that is within the parameters of what our culture allows and even promotes I decided not to try to 'cancel' it even if my endorsement had to be lukewarm. I also thought it was apropos given our ages.

Relay (2024)

Relay grabs you right away, and doesn't let go. It's the best thriller production I've seen in several years. The corporate espionage story stars Riz Ahmed, Lily James and Sam Worthington; directed by David Mackenzie.

Riz plays a highly anonymous broker/go between who effects payouts and safety for corporate whistleblowers. Through complicated intermediaries facilitated via a telecom relay service, he accepts a new client played by Lily James who claims she's so scared for her life that she simply wants to give back damning corporate secret documents she's stolen in exchange for the company agreeing to not come after her. That serves as the basis for the story, which provides undercover operations, wild rides, heart pounding chases, and a surprise twist near the end.

The story is intelligent and well thought out. The production design and cinematography are first rate.

The spy and technology aspects put me in mind of The Conversation and Enemy of the State, while several nods are given to Alfred Hitchcock, especially in a concert hall scene reminiscent of The Man Who Knew Too Much.

This is an increasingly rare picture where everything works, and climaxes in a gratifying ending.

New TV Series "The Hack"

The series examines two real-life stories: the work of Nick Davies, a journalist who uncovered evidence of phone hacking at the News of the World, as well as the investigation into the murder of Daniel Morgan, a private investigator.

 
The Long Walk. Typical Stephen King creation. I wanted to see it at the theater, because I read the novel 40 or 50 years ago when King published it under a pen name. It has King's fingerprints all over it.

Kind of. But that's pretty much the same reaction I have to most of King's work. I don't feel compelled to recommend it, but I wouldn't tell anyone not to bother either. It did hold my attention, and King always does that. The premise is "the last man standing." That's been done a lot, so there's not anything new in that regard. It's just another way to play the game.

Hunger Games does the same, but for some reason, as preposterous as such an event like that is, Hunger Games explains why it's happening, even covers the wicked motivations of the creator of the games. The Long Walk mentions some connection to the end of a great war and man's resilience to overcome, but it comes off more like a plot hole than an explanation.

I won't add that one to my private collection, but I'm happy I watched it, if only to compare it to the novel. I think the novel was better, but that was so long ago.

Some are better than others, and could be described as "fun" rather than "alarming." Remember the early StarTrek series. They encountered a few in their adventures, some seemed utopian on the surface, but rather then being finally exposed as alarming, they were exposed as dumb. Well, that was my take on them. OK, maybe dumb and alarming.
 
Well, I'm not sure where to post this because I "streamed" it on my computer on Tubi, but it's a movie not a series.

Anyway.

Tubi seems to have bought several movies starring Blythe Danner, someone I've always liked, and the one I just watched was,
The Tomorrow Man, with John Lithgow in the lead. I thought it was charming.
 
Our Little Sister - japanese produced - english subtitles on bilibili free chinese dvd carrier. all good family love and wholeness with lots of humour along the way - lifts the spirit from the western bog to the asian clouds!!
 
I started watching Wrath of Man starring Jason Statham (I could get into him) but I heard several F bombs before the movie got started good. I decided I couldn't be bothered with that nonsense. So before that I watched Geostorm (Gerard Butler, Jack Scalia), a disaster B movie, one of my favorite genres these days. It was okay. I think they spent too much time on trying to escape the bad guys than disastrous weather events, which are prominent in the trailer.
