Transitioning from Google properties to Apple

In recent times I've become increasingly dissatisfied with Google, on a number of levels. On one of those levels I am not pleased with their decision to trash the Fitbit brand they bought, so as to eliminate the competition for their line of Google watches, which will be competing head-on with Apple's offerings. Google's watch pricing will be comparable to Apple's, so in this matter I figure I might as well have an Apple watch.
When I bought my Google Pixel 7Pro phone, it included a guaranteed 5 years of software security / OS updates, plus a VPN as part of the deal. Sometime after my purchase, the VPN quietly became non-functional, a takeaway in which Google decided to modify the purchase agreement unilaterally.
Another bone of contention with Google- it appears Google's user information database has been hacked, showing that Google did not take proper steps in security, opting to incur a data-breach rather than incur additional expenditure which would impact their profit margin.

Transitioning will involve Apple products- just bought another iPad(11th Gen), considering an Apple watch and iPhone, down the road a bit. I'll continue to use some of Googles apps, until I get familiar enough with comparable Apple apps.

I’ve had a iPad since 2013 , and never looked back , both hubs and I have the same iPads now which are about 3 years old ( mines giving me issues ) and will likely get replaced when the new ones is released in Oct in Australia

We both have watches ( wouldn’t be without them ) bought during lockdown in Australia in 2020 ..in fact it had a huge update yesterday ….

We both have Apple phones , hubby has same model 12 ..but his is a model higher than mine as it’s compatible with his hearing aids system ( The system 17 phone is being released in Australia next month )

I have several Google apps on my iPad , including Google calendar ….I've never ever had Security issues with my Apple system , I’d recommend Apple any day , we found their after sales service / phone assistance 10 out of 10

The Google apps I like and use often: Google Maps, for navigating- gives voice directions that I've found to be indefensible when driving in unfamiliar areas. I think in the Apple realm Siri does the side-seat driving...? I share my Google Docs on all my devices logged in to a Google account, very convenient. If I'm not mistaken, Apple's iCloud Pages takes care of those document editing/sharing functions like Google Docs.
Between my and my wife's phone we upload thousands of photos, I pay $1.99/mo. for 100 GBs of storage. I'll probably continue to use Google Photos indefinitely. I will maintain my Google accounts, in order to keep my Youtube channels from going dormant.

I got my iCloud email address, I can import my Contacts and even my emails(?) over to the iCloud email account as well. My main Gmail address has had some 'exposure' on the dark web, likely though one or more of several data breaches, so transferring my business and personal email traffic to another venue feels like the right move.

Of course I'll still be using Linux on my desktops and laptops, but I want to lessen or eliminate use of Google search and Chrome browser. I do use Brave Browser and DuckDuckGo browser and search on a couple machines.

yep I’ve got whats important to me on my phone @Nathan ( photo )

I use the calendar all the time , actually it’s only just been added to the system here in Australia to work on watch

( the Calendar) …., so that will be handy …

I’ve always had reminders / pop up on my phone but I’m not one to have my phone with me 24/12 ….as far as the watch gos it’s very good for keeping a check in your Heath ….

in fact my DH would have had no idea he had Aerial fib without the watch ….he had a very severe attack one day at home , I was scared ….he was grey in the face ….so I phoned our GP …..

who in turn contacted a unknown to us Cardiologist, who phoned my DH all within 15 mins of the attack ……The cardiologist asked DH to email ~ the recorded data of the attack
( that’s recorded on the phone )

DH was told he had AF within 1/2 hour of the attack …..he had a blood clot
that could have killed him …:cry:

( the watch is set up , and all recording data / sleep 😴 / heart rates / falls ~ heath ~ is saved on your phone )

We sadly lost one of best friends recently , and his wife was fearful of falling or needing help , now she’s living alone , we advised her to buy an Apple Watch …she can call for help if she has a fall / is ill , she didn’t hesitate she’s got one the nxt day

Ive got other Google apps on my iPad

I just posted in another thread about cell phones and I was reminded of this thread @Nathan . I have had a Google branded phone ever since the HTC Dream came out and I do understand your frustrations as of late. I'll be looking forward to reading about your transition over to Apple. Another long time Android fan of mine switched over to Apple last year and she has no regrets.

@MarkinPhx , With computer tech being my hobby, exploring the Apple's ecosystem in depth and becoming proficient will be an interesting pastime. I still plan to continue full-time use of my Pixel 7pro, battery life is still very good, and security and OS updates are guaranteed for at least two my years. I'm still on the fence about getting an Apple watch, my main use would be for tracking my bio-metrics(including sleep stats), but a couple gym friends have reported dissatisfaction with their Apple watches.
I do want to step up to Apple's superior photo editing, which will give me some common ground with my brother, who's a long time Apple aficionado, and photography expert.

no system is safe, whether it's pc or apple. Safer would be Apple. I won't get started on Google or Amazon. Tooooooooo big, Tooooo powerful and tooooo much influence. No matter what you think, big brother is here NOW because of Google and Amazon.
The difference between them and, let's say standard oil from the past is that Google and Amazon and Facebook have us, Lock, stock and barrel. All that we do, who we talk to, where we buy, what we buy, our accounts, credit cards, birth records. They have it all. Legal or illegal, THEY HAVE IT ALL.
Regardless of all you hear the Government wants it all so they will say what they need to, to placate us and insure us that they have our backs. But they will pay for this information that Google, Amazon and Facebook has.
They know it. Google, Amazon and Facebook know it. Bottom line folks. Power Corrupts and Absolute power corrupts absolutley. Original quote is from John Dalberg in 1887.
Google, Amazon and Facebook do not erase ANYTHING. They store everything. Run for any office and see what turns up on your life, activities, associations. Think about it?

It's funny because when Android came out I was already a full blown Google fan. I did think that Google believed in the "don't be evil" mantra and at the time they were at least acting like it on the surface. As you know, the forums were very toxic between Android and iOS users. It was actually a fun time in a strange way. Google seemed to have ditched that mantra once Larry Page left and now all of them are "evil" in one way or another. Apple is more secure but the cost of that is being in a closed Apple eco system. And that closed eco system is why I was "anti Apple" back then and pro Android and Linux.

It is a shame that Google screwed up the Fitbit brand but they seem to do that with a lot of companies that they acquire.

Agreed, on all counts. Have you seen photos of, or read about the NSA's data centers? It is thought that with such resources, every single bit of electronic data communications Worldwide can be monitored and tracked, in real-time. Nothing new, Groklaw stopped publication in 2013 because- "due to pervasive government monitoring of the Internet, there could no longer be an expectation of the sort of privacy online that was necessary to collaborate on sensitive topics." 1984 just sounds like the past, but it is now.

I’ve used Apple products ever since my ex bought an Apple Amiga computer back in 1989.

I have a Gmail account and it seamlessly integrates with my Apple Watch and my Mac laptop. Apple has an onboard Mail app which I don’t use because I prefer Gmail’s interface.

I also use Google Docs and Sheets which again are easily accessed and used with both my iPhone and my Mac book air. I also use Mac’s Pages and Numbers which do the same things.

I find Apple products, apps etc to be overall more intuitive and user friendly than PC’s which is important to me because I also provide tech support for my clients who tend to be older and not as tech savvy, so the user friendly aspect is even more important.

I avoid Google like the plague and do everything I can not use anything google. I even hate it when the media and people say 'Google it' instead of 'Look it up'

Google isn't the whole internet.
