Kidney Stone Today.....OUCH, the pain!

This morning, I woke up as usual, stayed in bed till about 6:30 am while beginning the NY Times
Puzzles. While bending over the sink to brush my teeth, I experienced excruciating pain in my back, above my right hip.
It got progressively worse, till I was nauseous, sweating, hot and cold. Pain traveled to my groin area.

After about an hour of this, thinking (or wishing) I would die, I called my friend down the hall. She came, helped me dress, and called an ambulance.

The ER was not crowded, so I was examined, given pain injection, and a CT scan. I have heard people say this type of pain was worse than childbirth. I now believe that phrase. I'm home, stone (3 mm in size) has not passed yet, but I have equipment now to catch it. It's in the bladder now, so I hope it passes quickly with less pain.

Has anyone else gone through this?
 

OMG, you poor thing! I will never forget my best friend calling me at work to tell me she had called an ambulance. She was in so much pain from what turned out to be kidney stones that we both thought she would die. It was terrifying for me and excruciating for her. She remembers every single second of that experience to this day, and it was 43 years ago.

About 20 years ago I had a stone, not sure of it's origin but it was a horrible experience. When I hear the term "excruciating" I think of this incident. While in Urgent Care they wanted me to pee, I couldn't so they thought it would be a great idea to catheterize me. I wasn't impressed, I will never allow anyone to do that to me again. The next day I passed what looked like several grains of sand.
 

Hi Kika, oh gosh how painful passing a kidney stone can be. Terrible pain!

Yes, I have gone through this once in my life at the aged of 45. I was at work, things unfolded fast, co workers called ambulance and off I went to the hospital emergency room where they kept me 6 hours and until the kidney stone passed.

It was an awful experience.

One of mine was like crushed glass when passed. 😭
I had been sent home without imaging, by a Dr who was covering for my pcp at the time.

Thank you everyone for the kind words, hugs and painful experiences. It has not passed. In addition to the pain meds I received in the ambulance and at the ER, I am taking Flomax for 5 days. That is to relax the area enough to make a stone go through (I think that what I was told)

@Nathan: My late husband was once very sick in the ER and I watched them put a catheter in him. I FELT the pain for him. He did not flinch but breathed in his bottom lip. I know it had to hurt.

The stone is 3 mm in size. ER doc said it is small enough to pass out from the bladder, with some degree of pain, but likely not as bad as when it was higher up this morning. I'm drinking lots of water to help flush it as directed.

Thank you again......so much pain and we all survived!
 
My late dad had a terrible kidney stone problem. They had to operate once to get one out. I've seen him writhing on the floor in terrible pain.

My sister passed one with great pain.

I had one too large to pass. It wasn't bothering me but if it moved and blocked the opening, I was going to be in trouble.

So, I had lithotripsy. The first one didn't even dent it. The second one broke it into pieces but they were still too large to pass. The third one turned it into mush. Each one was three weeks apart. My husband died in between the second and third ones.

I had bad bruises on my back from the litho, but it was the stents that gave me the most trouble. Like having a bad bladder/kidney infection.

Luckily, I've never had another one.

I too had one (5mm) about 20 years ago. When I was experiencing pain, my wife kept telling me that I had gas 😲 and all I had to do was let it pass. Drink some Bromo Seltzer she said.
Well after a few hours, she finally took me to an ER. After an ultrasound and some meds, I was given a screen to capture the stone and hope I trap it as it passed.
I'll never forget the pain. 😮
 
I've never had kidney stones but one day I had a terrible pain in my stomach, and it came in waves. A friend took me to hospital where they ran many tests, it turned out I had a 4cm gall stone (about the size of a squash ball) stuck in the small bowel and I was immediately taken to surgery. I was so scared, but the doctor said afterwards they opened me up and sliced through the small bowel, cleaned it out and sewed me up again. One of the doctors that assisted in the operation came to my bed and showed me a photo of the large gallstone. He said that gallstones and kidney stones are probably the worst pain.
 
I had a kidney stone which blocked my urethra more than three decades ago. "Excruciating" is the right word to describe the pain. I was literally rolling on the floor because of it. And a woman told me the same comparison, that the pain from a kidney stone is much worse than during childbirth.

Oh, that had to be awful. Let's hope stones are all done with your family.
 
Many years ago a co worker was complaing of kidney stones and after he passed them he brought them to work to show us. I was shocked at how jagged they were, only then did it really sink in how painful they would be to pass. Hope you can get them out quickly!

Thank you Pepper. I am fortunate to be at home today, capturing and straining my yucky urine, without any pain. Yesterday, IV Toradol once in the ambulance, and again later in the ER, took care of it nicely.
I will hope and pray that you never experience anything like it. You have enough going on already.
Stay well....I do feel better today, just drinking as much water as I possibly can to flush it out.

OMG, I never realized they looked liked that!! I was imagining those cute little polished stones used to put over soil in potted plants!! Well, that now explains the large amount of blood that goes along with those sharp little things. Thank you for posting that.
 
My brother got Kidney Stone with horrible pain that happened in his 50's.

In my late 20s and early in my 30s, my urethra was 'widen' due to frequent UTI that might help to not get Kidney Stone. Twice widening Urethra was painful, but in my twight age, I'm now very grateful to have it done.

My late mother passed away in her mid-30s from Kidney disease and seems both my brother and I got 'bad gene' from her. I'm always careful my Kidney.
