The quietest room on Earth

Back in the mid 70's I was able to visit the anechoic room at Bell Labs in Murray Hill, NJ. It was at, one time, listed in the Guinness book of records as the quietest place on earth. After a few minutes in the room I could indeed hear the blood running through my ears. The floor of the room was a type of wire mesh that was suspended midway between the ceiling and the bottom of the chamber creating a sense of floating in a void. It was a unique experience to spend a few minutes in there!

The most quiet room I've ever been in was in the middle of a cave in southern Indiana. The guide turned his flashlight off. You couldn't see or hear a thing. My husband said that guides do that to give you an idea of what it's like to be in total darkness and no sound. It was freaking me out. In all fairness, my husband said that, that particular guide had his light off way too long. It was a kid and I think he was trying to scare people. Well...it worked. but I'd never let on to him that it did.
