..i Data Breach !

Not only Gmail but Outlook, Yahoo and others too.
Gmail users have been urged to check their accounts after it was revealed that more than 183 million passwords were stolen in a data breach.

Australian cyber expert Troy Hunt, who revealed the incident, called it a 'vast corpus' of breached data, which totals 3.5 terrabytes.

To put that into perspective, that's the equivalent to 875 full-length HD movies.

Here's how to check if your email data has been compromised.

The incident occurred in April but has only just been disclosed on Mr Hunt's Have I Been Pwned (HIBP) website.

According to the expert, breached data contained 183 million unique email addresses alongside the websites they were entered into and the passwords used.

To check if you've been compromised, head to the Have I Been Pwned website and enter your email address in the search bar.

Next, tap on the button marked 'Check' and the site will show you the list of data breaches affecting your email address.

Even if not included in the recent Gmail breach, your details may have been involved in past breaches going back over a decade.

If you are one of the 183 million people affected in this latest incident, you need to change your email password as soon as possible.

Once this is done, enable two-factor authentication (2FA) if you haven't already – which sends a code to your smartphone to get into your online accounts.

According to Mr Hunt, this incident is not a single breach but a collection of 'stealer logs' – a series of data files generated and compiled by 'malware' (malicious software).

  1. Head to Have I Been Pwned
  2. Enter your email address in the search bar and tap 'Check'
  3. Check the list of breaches involving your email address
  4. Change your password if it has been involved in a breach

Thanks for the warning.
Checked my accounts... no breaches on gmail, and the others haven't been 'compromised' since 2020, so I think they are okay!
excellent..

I checked mine...gmail has been breached on 6 different sites.. Canva.. being one of them.. which is an enormously popular photo sharing site.... I checked all my email address.. Hotmail had been breached.. but my address not since 2019 .. so that was ok cuz I've changed my password since then... and the only one that hadn't been breached in any way was my DuckDuckgo..address

There are so many password claims that I'm beginning to wonder if they're just sensationalizing this stuff to scare us like they did with Covid. There was a big deal about getting passwords stolen off of our password managers and I was manually inputting everything for the longest time.

I finally got sick of it and put it all back into my password manager and I've had no issues. I think they just like to scare the bejesus out of everyone because it gets them read.

well if you check your email address in the link you'll be able to see if it's been compromised....

It happened in April and  now they're telling us?? 🤯
yep... unfortunately that's seems to be always the case now.. same with food that's been somehow adulteratted.. they wait until many people have bought it.. then put a tiny note on the supermarket door or window most people wouldn't notice to say something like ''Chocolate recall contains nuts''.. date last month..

gmail once in may of 24 because of a news page i was receiving. pw has been changed many times since and i don't request emails from places anymore so i should be good. ty holly.

It told me I've had 5 data breaches, but the most recent was 2021, and the oldest was Myspace, back in 2016. I'd forgotten I had a Myspace account as I haven't used it for a very long time, so I don't think any of them were really significant for me. Thanks for the warning though, I'll pass it on to a friend of mine who is heavily involved in IT development, and for whom it might prove useful.

Thanks. I have investigated the site in the OP which tells us how to check, and all sources confirm it is safe to use for the intended purpose.

I don't mean to be negative, but whether it shows my emails were compromised or not, the breach occurred in April and I've changed the password several times since then as well as the two-factor authentication method. Whatever details they may have gathered in April are now obsolete. And what I change today may be compromised tomorrow or next month, but we won't be informed of it for 6 months later, like this time.
..but for most people it would be very necessary to check because most people will not have changed their passwords since April..or for years

Thats scary ,we had a call from friends yesterday saying they received a email from my Hubs in the last few days and it had a link but they couldn’t open it ….OH NO ….My hubs didn’t send them anything ….we have not even spoken to them in months …. let alone send a email …..they said it’s …..Got ….Fred Jones …so it’s GOT TO BE ~ from you
Meaning my hubs ….

he went through his sent box but he didn’t send them anything …but despite his warning they were still trying to open it ….Yes it’s gmail o_Oo_O
He'd better get to it and change his details ….today …

I know. I went to Walmart and just now finding your reply. Yes, they should check if concerned. I probably have a bad attitude about all these breaches because if it's not the credit bureau breached, it's some other one(s) and it's always months later when we find out. I went back and deleted my previous post just now.

Well, sh.t, it says that one email has been breached by a company that I never had anything to do with?? the name of the company is Luxottica. And it's eye wear. I don't understand how that could happen. And it was 5 years ago.
Probably Spyware. I had a couple breaches from several years ago with two companies I had nothing to do with.

I think some of the sites we use and get emails from are either infected with Spyware and don't know it or it's purposefully allowed.

I only open certain things and rarely click on anything at all. Like I use credit karma but I never click on anything in the emails. I rarely even open them. I go directly to the site.

*adding that one of the breaches came from a previous job. I never had any credit issues.

This week I have been bombed with spammers e-mails. I must
have clicked on something iffy in the last couple weeks to warrant all this crap.....
