SNAP benefits to end due to US govt shutdown

It’s sad that our elected officials aren’t capable of working together to accomplish the most basic tasks, like funding the government.

If people in business behaved this way they would be fired.

On the news last night they said the money for SNAP wasn’t available but it’s just paperwork, the same amount of money is flowing into the federal government just as it did before this nonsensical shutdown.

This is a topic that is a burning fire on Social Media. From what I've seen, it's being used mainly to demonize recipients.

It's sad how cynical some people are. They're usually the loudest. We get so little from our governments, at least EBT is an example of giving something back. Would *I* get something back? No. But that's an even greater blessing.

This, combined with government workers not receiving paychecks, will result in a much higher dependence on local food banks funded only by donations to fill the gaps. Their donations are already seriously down due to inflation and economic uncertainty.

If the shutdown is extended, the likelihood of home foreclosures and credit card defaults will rise for those unemployed or unpaid workers. New home sales will suffer setbacks, as prospective buyers will deplete savings for basic living expenses, rather than making a downpayment on a home.

I'm very concerned for people who are currently struggling to put food on their tables. Food banks are already overstretched.

To make matters worse, many in generations after ours did not learn to cook or bake from scratch, and therefore don't consider using Depression era techniques to stretch food dollars. Believe me, I'm not blaming the victims - I'm expressing frustration with a society and education system that has a near single-minded focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) while ignoring life skills.

Extra curricular activities for little children through HS age include sports of every possible stripe, plus dance, theater, art, music, crafts, robotics and so forth. I'm not against enriching activities. Far from it. But with both parents working - or a single parent whose time is stretched to the limit, and the kids in sports activities all weekend, there's little time or opportunity for them to learn how simple it is to to darn a sock, take up a hem, sew on a button, cook, bake, clean, plant and care for a small garden, change out or fix a toilet, change a tire, do their own pedicures, and so forth.

The reliance on services and processed foods, fast foods, meat-at-every-meal and takeout is disastrous to already tight budgets.

During covid my landlord gave away food in the laundry room. She's like that and I wouldn't be surprised if she did something soon to help tennants.

It will be interesting to see how the dishonest news sources turn this into a crisis of epic proportions. One sister in law is crying the blues over losing less than $100 a month and how she will go hungry, but yet she can afford to smoke two packs a day and play video poker for hours.

Quick question.... Does anyone think this is the answer??

"We are gonna stick together. Nov 3rd at 6:30 we're going to Walmart. We're going to Walmart. And at 7:30 we're gonna walk out of Walmart with our buggies. They can't catch everybody. All you gotta do is run."We have to stick together. It don't even matter.Remember, put it in your calendar. November 3rd, 6:30 to 7:30. You better be running off that."

ah..food stamps I;ve heard of those... are they literally stamps or how does it work ?....We don't have that here in the Uk
Not stamps anymore...

SNAP benefits (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps) are loaded onto an EBT card (Electronic Benefits Transfer).

An EBT card can hold more than just SNAP benefits, depending on your state and eligibility. Here’s what else might be loaded onto the same card:

TANF (Cash Assistance)
Cash for basic needs (rent, utilities, etc.)
Withdrawn at ATMs or used like debit; may have fees

State General Assistance
Cash aid from state programs... Varies by state

Refugee Cash Assistance.
Cash for eligible refugees... Limited time (usually 8–12 months)

Child Care Assistance
Payments to providers (in some states)

OMG...that's a lot of free stuff...wow !

Yep. The fact that you can use the card at an ATM opens the possibility of getting cash for things other than what it was meant for.
yes that's very clearly obvious...wow....... I have a million questions now,but I can't ask them cuz it's all politcally charged...I'm going to go and read up on it all....... but one question are they stopping this completely.. for everyone ?

I chose not to receive SNAP when I retired. Too much effort for $23 a month, which is shameful anyway for seniors living on low SS checks. That's what my neighbor gets. I have gotten them in the past at times when I was struggling or starting over and raising my son. Back then, I got $200+ because I had a child. That's how I know the effort, paperwork and headaches that has to be endured.

I live alone. I don't eat much. I can buy my own food and it lasts for such a long time in my fridge and freezer. I decided to leave what SNAP amount I would have gotten to children and families and bypass the headache.

My heart goes out to those, singles, couples and families, who will suffer with this delay in benefits. 🙏🏽 Praying for support to come to you in other ways that will help you through.
