Morning all, on my early walk at 6:45,temp was 40 as I walked down the street to local co op bought couple items, took me 20 min round trip
No plans today except finish reading my book, read NYT, have weekly dinner at 5:30 with the guys but without Connie. She called me last night, she;s being discharged sometime today will go to rehab at the other Gates facility in Williamsville{ suburb of Buffalo} I told her she is really missed around here, hopefully she won;t be at rehab for too long

Good morning, all. Thursday, November 13th. Just past 6 AM here and all is quiet in the house and neighborhood. Just turning light so even the birds have yet to chirp their morning songs.

Rain is expected here this evening through Monday. Gotta batten down the hatches!

Yesterday I made and froze two big batches of one of my Christmas cookies (Chocolate). Seven more types to go - the plan is to knock out one per day over the next week.

On an update on the painful heel spur that my GP diagnosed ten days ago, the OTC gel he recommended is working some magic. It would be a massive understatement to say I was skeptical of any pain relief coming from rubbing in a topical medication 2-3 times a day. The tenderness and pain are reduced considerably.

I've been hurting from this for several months but didn't bother going to the doctor before my annual physical because I believed the pain would lessen with time (it didn't).

The box says it's "medicated gel clinically proven to relieve arthritis pain." Active ingredient is Diclofenac Sodium 1%. Brand name is Voltaren, but I bought the generic equivalent. (A MASSIVE 5.29 oz tube for $13.89 - Walmart pickup.)

I'm hoping it will also bring relief when the osteoarthritis flares up in my fingers.

I'm a little jealous. I really miss cooking Thanksgiving dinner (and I remember very well how hard it is to find a small Butterball).

I'm in a studio apartment, so I can't host anyone, but in future holidays I plan to rent a local Airbnb with a full kitchen and a dining room so I can. I would have done so this year, but the prolonged government shutdown made things financially uncertain. Also, my older daughter's family aren't quite ready to travel yet (twins who just turned 1, and a 6-week-old infant); however, in future years I am hoping to host a good old-fashioned family Thanksgiving. It might not be right on Thanksgiving, because both of my daughters have jobs (therapist and nurse) that require 24-hour coverage, and thus they don't always get holidays off, but I've never been fixated on celebrating on the day itself.

Gosh, I'm rambling. I'd better get to work.

I;m very pleased you got relief from the pain. It's called Voltarol here, and I have a tube in the drawer always. The great thing is you can buy it OTC... at least you can here

TBH I've never used it on the oA on my fingers..I have absolutely no idea why..:unsure:... I will remedy that.... but I do use it on my knees,and on my lower back.. and the active ingredient diclofenic is a wonder drug.

So much so they're trying to get Voletrol banned in the UK.. this is what they do with anything that works... including trying to ban paracetamol, and lansoprazol /omeprazol

Had to look these up. Paracetamol is acetaminophen on this side of the pond and the other two are GERD meds.

I couldn't find any information on attempted bannings underway in the US. Ditto Voltarol/Voltaren.

With the last, I must say there are a surprising number of rather ominous warnings on the package, tube and insert, including a statement to not use for more than 21 days unless directed by a doctor. I think all NSAIDs (non-aspirin nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) carry similar warnings.

I wrote recently about an eye appointment and my upcoming cataract surgery. At the time they told me I could expect to wait 5 months (so until March) until I have the actual procedure. Well, color me surprised. They called and asked if I would like to have the surgery on the 17th - this coming Monday.

Not particularly looking forward to it, but saying that, its apparently a short procedure (20 minutes) and you get to go home pretty quickly.

So that was good news.
 
I finished my Thanksgiving food shopping. They still didn't have turkey cutlets in the store, so I bought a turkey breast tenderloin ($8.99), now in repose in my freezer. Also bought a box of cornbread stuffing mix. I already have cranberry sauce, Idahoan "loaded" instant mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes and canned pumpkin (I mash the yams and mix them together with the pumpkin). I guess that will do.

A significant cold front storm belatedly arrived about 5am this morning with maybe 3/4 inch of rain so far now by 10am. Much more in surrounding coastal mountains. Looking at weather radar, in a lull the last half hour but another blob of heavy rainfall is about to arrive that will last at least an hour. Since both September and October already delivered some nice storms, our region is greening up rapidly at a level during this early period of our wet season, unlike we have seen in recent years.

Yesterday Wednesday 11/12/2025, given continued uncommon diffuse cloud lighting with calm breezes, went back out for a second straight day, to work fall leaf stream canyon landscapes. Was not too confident about what I would find, but was surprised. Unlike Tuesday, when I drove 120 miles and didn't even take my camera out of the car, this time driving less than 40 miles all day, worked 5 subjects. Afterwards, back home, have been busy for hours post processing images.

Just completed my second subject, that is now the best of my images from within my local urban region parklands. So am quite pleased. Will post in our photo thread. Two more shots to work. What surprised me was how much better the local canyon leaf subjects looked at this time of year due the rains with considerable green herbs rising up everywhere and a general clean wet look. Our inner coastal California region stream canyons are more often still dry, dusty, with muted browns with stream flows very low. Plenty of fungi and mushrooms rising up too. After the current storm leaves, will get out again. Another large storm is forecast by late Sunday.

I'm hoping to. She has to work Thanksgiving night, and there aren't too many places here that are open for a meal on Thanksgiving Day, even during the day. (My older daughter and I tried that a few years ago; the only place open was a truck stop, and the food was really bad. Not that the food is the point, of course.)

So, we might go to a movie, even though that isn't very Thanksiving-ish, or I may go to her place. As long as I can see her at some point, I'll be happy.

The same issues come up at Christmas. It gets a bit complicated because my ex is right here in town, but he doesn't speak to me despite my attempts to be civil, so that kind of throws a wrench into things. If he'd unbend a little, we could all get together and things would be a little simpler, especially for the girls.

Complicating the girls' situation is the fact that my older daughter has multiple in-laws, because her husband's parents are divorced and both have remarried, and my younger daughter is living with her long-term boyfriend, and they want to see his family, too. They have lots of juggling to do. I try not to put any pressure on them.

And, of course, there's my son and his girlfriend, 10 hours away in Des Moines, but . . . Well, you all know that story.
