Tarzan learned the language of the apes that found him and raised him, not just grunts and guttural sounds, but actual words. Yes, in the comics, the apes used actual words, not that I could understand, but I do remember one of the words, "bundolo," which was usually being yelled.
I wasn't thinking about Tarzan at all, but bundolo just popped into my mind today. As I suspected, it can mean "kill," which I finally learned after all these years on the internet. The apes didn't seem to have a large vocabulary. An ape dictionary would probably consist of less than 8 words, at least as far as Edgar Rice Burroughs believed.
