we still have them here. i wish they'd get rid of them. like @RambleTamble i do all or most of my shopping online.Walmart is getting rid of shelf checkout due to high theft rates.

I can see that self checkout would invite theft. They usually have an attendant watching, but it would be easy to slip an item by without ringing the bell, especially when all the self checkouts are in use. I'm not surprised by that business decision at all.Walmart is getting rid of shelf checkout due to high theft rates.

Soon they'll have AI surveillance bots to monitor what people do at the checkout kiosks and when they're shopping. Or they could just force everyone to do all their shopping online, which is what I do anyway.
We have stores where we have to do the bagging ourselves. They’re so fast you can watch the prices. I found mistakes after I got home. I would have caught these if I did the checking out.The Aldis I shop at has all checkout lines and no self checkouts, but they are fast. Although the girls don't bag your stuff. However, they are checking out items faster than I can take my things out of my cart. I try to race them. Once in a while, I even beat them. But they are fast. I have no problems at Aldis, even if the lines are long.
That’s good, imo. I’m sick of paying for theft.@RambleTamble

Your not far off.
In Ontario and Quebec, Metropolitan stores have camera's that use AI and watch for people who say scan peaches and punch in code for bananas. This new system they are implementing knows the difference and will notify the cashier to come verify your perchase
I keep asking for a raise......Walmart is getting rid of shelf checkout due to high theft rates.

I don't really care what Walmart is doing, too far to drive plus Amazon fills my needs better anyway.Walmart is getting rid of shelf checkout due to high theft rates.

Exactly! They've really cut down the number of self check stations at my Walmart, but haven't increased the manned checkouts. So the lines are long and getting longer.
I think they're trying to drive people toward ordering stuff and getting deliveries or pickups.
Our Aldi's recently installed their first self checkout machines....I was just getting used to self checkout. Not to say I like it better than checkout lines. It's six of one and half dozen of the other. I did like the option to use either one. For just a couple items self checkout is faster.

we don't and never have in 50 years had Checkout staff bagging our groceries, we all do it ourselves....I prefer self-checkout at Walmart and other stores. I'm very picky about the way my items are bagged, especially with today's prices! And traditional checkouts offer virtually no "human interaction" anyway, just a surly—or, at best, impassive—cashier scanning items and plunking them willy-nilly into a bag. I think I can count on the fingers of one hand the number of friendly cashiers I've encountered at Walmart. Target's a little better.
Problem is no One checkout overseer can watch 20 self service checkouts.. at the same time... however most of our self checkouts do have cameras installed, so I'm sure that helps in some way ... also in some of our supermarkets you can still not get out of the store unless we scan our till receipts..I can see that self checkout would invite theft.
