Yes. We called them galoshes.I hated wearing them.

I remember them being stiff and hard to walk in. Cold too because they had no lining.

I mostly remember cold wet feet!

We had an assortment of old black barn boots, green hunting boots and enormous black galoshes with railroad clips.

We wore whatever came close to fitting with an extra pair of socks.

Most of them had a hole in them, my mother’s solution was to have us wear old bread bags over our socks.

Yep, hated them. Once I was out of sight of the house, I'd take them off, drop them over a fence. Then retrieve them on my return home.

In the uk they're clled Wellies short for Wellington Boots


I had a yellow oilskin coat , souwester , and welly boots.. when I was about 7.....

They weren't fashionable then, or cute.. and no one else in my class wore on so I felt embarassed going to school dressed like a fishermans' friend

I had galoshes with the buckles on them to wear to school when it rained. After I was 14 or 15, I wore a pair of waterproof hikers. I kept them on all day.

I remember my great grandmother would wear them in the winter and line them with newspaper to keep her feet warm.

And then there were the opaque "rain booties" that ladies wore over their good shoes.
