ABC, which is owned by Disney, has a two-hour presentation on TV and also on Disney’s channel titled “First Christmas.” It’s hosted and narrated by Kevin Costner, who does a very good job of telling the story.

The presentation tells the story of the birth of Jesus. The story follows the Bible with no Hollywood glitz or makeover. It tells the story of how the Angel told Mary she would be impregnated with a baby that would be the Messiah. At first, Joseph is ready to kick her to the curb, but then has a dream that an Angel tells him not to be afraid and he should continue to marry and care for Mary because she is carrying a Baby that will be the Messiah.

Viewers will learn about how the couple ended up in a shelter with animals and how Mary delivered the Baby. The story talks about how the Magi came to Bethlehem by following the star and also tells about King Herod’s illnesses, which were both physical and mental. He suffered from paranoia and other illnesses. Herod was afraid that the Baby Jesus would eventually overthrow him and because the Magi did not report back to him where the Baby was, he ordered all male children two years old and younger be killed.

The story does go on to tell how Joseph and Mary quickly go to Egypt to avoid King Herod’s cruel treatment of young males.

It’s a powerful story that every Christian may want to watch. I have seen it twice now.

First Christmas

The Bible according to Hollywood! The reason that Herod was afraid of being overthrown by the baby is because Jesus was of royal blood. When he was crucified the Romans wrote, King of the Jews above his head, because he DID have a claim to the title. Mary would not have been alone when she gave birth. If nothing else, the inn-keepers wife would have helped her. The Magi were astronomers. They had read a horoscope which gave details of a special baby's birth.

I watched it on Saturday evening at my girlfriend’s house. I found it very interesting and mostly accurate. You are right that I didn’t see any Hollywood add-ons, which is unusual. Kevin Costner surprised me. He did a good job as emcee and narrator. He has such a calm voice that kept the listener focused on the show.

I would have liked to watch it again, but it won’t be free on ABC anymore before Christmas. My girlfriend nor I have the Disney Channel or Hulu.

I don't have Disney either but if anyone catches it elsewhere, please give shout-out for us.
I have watched The Chosen a few times and really appreciate how they show how the disciples
struggled with their human faults like we all do. It clearly shows how Jesus was a teacher, not a God.

The Bible according to Lavinia seems to have invented a helpful innkeeper's wife. ;) How do we know he even had a wife? It's not impossible for women to give birth alone, or, in Mary's case, with only her husband's help. In remote areas like the American frontier lots of women gave birth without the help of another woman.

I have watched The Chosen and been offended by the made up weaknesses they invented for Jesus and the disciples, for example it shows Jesus nervously pacing up and down practicing the sermon on the mountain before he spoke. Jesus had always known his mission and was teaching rabbis in the Temple when he was twelve. I don't think he ever needed to practice, but only needed to begin speaking and his words would flow.

But then I believe Jesus was a God and we shouldn't be trying to turn him into an ordinary guy just like us.

I'm sorry to be argumentative on this sacred subject, but I think it's extremely important for us not to add anything to the Bible.
The Bible contains multiple warnings, primarily in Deuteronomy 4:2, 12:32, Proverbs 30:6, and Revelation 22:18-19, instructing believers not to add to or subtract from God's revealed word.

I began and actually wrote a reply sticking up for myself but frankly for me I will believe as I feel right to, I will continue to watch or read any story I wish to on this subject and enjoy it or not. Thank you for your personal review of it, but it is just that. I am sorry you got such an adverse
reaction and found so many things to upset you about it. My apologies to you for posting about it, it will not happen again.
