Our country is the United States, or the United States of America, but I can see the difficulty that presents to people in other countries when referring to us in conversation. So, they usually say "Americans," as in "I saw some Americans," and that should be considered acceptable, even if not precise.

It's easier to say, I'm an American than to say I'm an UnitedStatesian 
but, I tend to go with --- I'm from the USA, because we can't really claim America as all ours and these days, people are more likely to split hairs.

Saying I'm an American is not claiming all of the continent as belonging to the US. Fact is, I am an American. And if someone tries to split hairs with me about that fact, I'm gonna snatch them bald-headed.
True, most of the expats abroad refer it as "the states"...for example, "I am going back to the states next month"
FWIW, most people on the west half of the U.S. refer the east half as "back east".

I was thinking of paraphrasing someone in elected office who used the term crime infested sh!thole, admittedly referring to some place else, so thanks for that...You can call it a sh!thole
Why not move to another country if this person think it's a shi*t hole?

I feel entitled to bash America since I was born here. Not the same as someone that moved here from another country and complains about it.
In all fairness America is no better or worse than some other countries. It has good and bad in many categories, one cannot realistically expect everything to be near perfect.
The thing for me that is hard to stomach is that the government, media, politicians, large corporations, ect., all continually spew propaganda claiming how Americans have it better than anyone else in the world. Sadly, most Americans are brainwashed to believe this completely
I sure don't need big brother or anyone else telling me how good I have it, I can think for myself

My parents, eldest sister and I were born in India from Irish and Scottish ancestors. We came to Australia just after the War and after 15 years my father decided for all of us to get Australian citizenship, which we did. . I must say I have never felt Australian or look Indian and a girlfriend from work used to tease me by saying I was a displaced person. I am proud that I live in Australia

People go to where money and opportunities are. Most refugees from central and Southern America go to the U.S. for economy reason not for any conviction of freedom, religion or any of these crap, they go for money. Don't forget there are wealthy people in every single of central and south America too. Same with African or eastern Europe or middle eastern migrants to Europe.

I always refer to the country as The United States, or ocassionally The U.S.
I call us Americans. I have never heard the term American used for anyone except people in the United States, but have heard the terms Central American and South American to define the people of those areas.

In the interest of being honest we should call it the "formerly United States". We may still have some freedom and bravery but how much is for the oligarchs to decide.
What about the other way around HollDoll? UK or ...? My impression is no one in your parts calls it England.

well we wouldn't call the UK england, that would be like calling the USA...California....
England is just one part of the UK....
Growing up we always called it Great Britain, or even just Britain... but now almost everyone calls it the UK
The difference between the 2 is.. that... Great Britain is the largest island, which comprises.. 3 countries, England, Scotland, and Wales.... and the surrounding smaller islands..
The United kingdom ( Uk).. is a sovereign state that includes Great Britain ( the 3 afores mentioned countries plus Northern Ireland, making the UK the larger political entity. Think of it as: Great Britain is the island, and the UK is the political union of England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
ETA :...if for example like me a Scot who lives in England, I am first and foremost a Scot but I can't identify as English because I wasn't born here, so I would tell an outsider that I am British... from Scotland....
