My Grandmother bought them for my father (her son-in-law).
But Dad couldn't stand them and politely never said a thing.
Of course, us kids were the benefactors each year!
Sorry for the downer, but I have a sad story....
Every Christmas for a good 10yrs or so, I gifted my Mom with a Hallmark Ornament. She loved them, and she'd get all giddy about hanging the newest one on her tree every year, and talked about eventually having her whole tree decorated exclusively with Hallmark Ornaments (it was a very large tree).
My oldest brother started buying them for her, too, and then one of her grandkids, and then another. It became a tradition. And one year, my Dad built her this huge red & white Hallmark Ornament storage box for them. She was so tickled with that thing. Every post-Christmas, she'd sit next to that box saying "This one goes here, that one fits in there..." admiring each one, one last time, until she'd get to see it again next Christmas.
Meanwhile, my baby sister was a hard-core drug addict; in and out of our lives; in and out of rehab; all of us taking turns trying to help her get clean, get a job, get a place, and all that.
One year, she stole Mom's box of ornaments from our parent's garage and sold it to a local a pawn shop. They sold it before any of us realized it was missing. I don't think any of us ever forgave her for that.
