On The Subject of Pass Keys...do you use

I am thick in the head today...confused

If I get a pass key for Outlook I do the normal thing like type in my mail address...now how do I get that pass key if it
is a number.
Does it appear automatically or do I need to have it written down somewhere, is it emailed, or by text. etc etc etc....
The website assigns you a pass key number, and stores it.

I'm still using my passwords, no passkeys. I suspect passkeys are a temporary place card for some other type of sign-in to-come, so I pass.
My car insurance company website demanded that I establish a passkey. I didn't even understand what was going on. It asked for me to enter a PIN.

I still use my username and password but there's a next screen asking for the elusive PIN number.

I usually use DuckDuckGo browser which blocks a lot of stuff. So I have to use MS Edge to get past the passkey question from now on.

These are the same questions many have, which at least in part makes them decide not to sign up for a pass key. My concern would be that I might do something wrong in the middle of the process, then have it fail and would be unable to fix the mess. And from what I've read, at that point there would be no going back to signing in as I used to.

Does your car insurance company require that all their insureds use a computer to buy insurance and conduct business with them? State Farm has no such requirement.

Websites: I ignore the passkey offer, and the two factor authentication annoyance, where-ever possible.

Devices: My 3 iPads required a 6 digit passkey...or else we don't do business. To me, that's just a 6 digit PIN, both of which I see as being much less secure than a password,

Could you further explain what alternative ways there are to pay? Calling with a credit card? Right now its a direct bank transfer.

I called the human being in the office and gave her my credit card number and she paid the bill. Prior to that, I tried paying online unsuccessfully because it wanted to send a code to my email, my email wanted to text a code to my phone, and I was caught up in a loop.

Did you notice I had asked if your car insurance company requires you to do business with them on a computer, or they won't sell you insurance. If you don't want to answer, that's fine. But I added that State Farm has no such requirement. There are people who have no computer but they have State Farm insurance.

I didn't answer because I don't know what requirements are. I am trying to evaluate whether it would be worth it to me to change the way I do business.

I have not been looking to change anything yet.

I set up automatic payment transfers through my bank. I listed the names of businesses and the amounts, and the bank transferred the payments from my checking account directly to the businesses.

About 4 years ago (when I got married), I stopped doing it that way, so I don't know if banks still do that, but I don't know why not. Maybe ask your bank about it.

I should look into that they do offer it. I have to get ready for the dementia years.

So the amounts you pay are hard coded and have to be updated at the bank's end if they change?

Yes, but that was rare, and I could change them online. I had auto-pay for my car and car insurance, internet, club dues...I forget what else but they were payments that weren't subject to frequent changes.

The only reason I asked is because, in your post #28, you wrote, "My car insurance company website demanded that I establish a passkey." This left me feeling it was mandatory to have an internet a/c to do business with them.

In another post, you mentioned direct transfer of payment. I don't do that since it takes away my control. State Farm recently came up for renewal. That's when I compare rates and don't want any insurance payments coming directly out of my bank account at the very time when I may switch to a different insurer.

I have to authorize that payment method each month. It's the default and I have to either change it or not before hitting the Submit button. All this is done at the Insurance company end. It's not a bank making my payments. So I feel the same way about control.

You can cancel or change auto transfers from checking any time at no charge. You can add and remove recipients. You say who, when, and how much. All the bank does is transfer the funds.

I never set up pass key usage because I'm not sure what exactly that is and don't feel like going through the procedures to find out. Although it's a pain, I like two factor identification. It allegedly helps keep our accounts from being hacked (from our end anyway). I only use a 4 digit passcode for a couple of things. I started using a 4 digit pass code for my tablet because when Google asked for passcode verification before installing something new, I used to get confused as to whether they wanted a Google password or the tablet's password (they wanted the tablet's). I have about 80 (or more) active accounts to keep track of. I remember most of the sign in info.

Yes, and post 39 says, "I have to authorize that payment method each month. It's the default and I have to either change it or not before hitting the Submit button." For me to use it, I would require that procedure, regardless of bank policy, but at the same time, if I need to go in and authorize it every month in order for it to happen, it's just as easy for me to make each monthly payment as it comes due without having anything automatic set up.

Ah. Sorry, I missed that. All I had to do was check my balance to make sure everything was paid...and I only did that for the first few months..

I stopped all the auto-pays after I bought this house a few years ago. Now I do paperless billing or pay at the website, which I resisted for a long time, or I send a check.
