Reflections of My Life

:) I find you excited (passionate) about many things, Kat. Your love of animals, cleaning, order, wellbeing are just a few.
I thought about you saying that to me all day. You are right. I guess it is because for most of my life those things made up a good portion of my life. I take it as a compliment. Thank you!!!!

Yesterday it was 1 degree when I got up. Today it is 34. That is an improvement. So not going to complain about it being cold. Did some laundry yesterday and going to do more today. I want it all caught up before the new machines are installed. I am figuring when the new machines are in the laundry room will be crowded with everyone wanting to use them.

Something I see in people as they get older is that many will need something like a hearing aid or a walker and will deny they need it. The hearing aid is pretty common to deny. The result is that friends stop having conversations with them. It is tiring trying to explain things over and over to them. Don't even try making a joke! They will not get it or understand it. It almost makes me think they are getting Dementia but it could be just the result of not hearing anything I am saying.

Had a phone conversation with my friend who lives downstairs. She did not hear most of what I said. Then she argued with me that the manager was not here yesterday. Because it says on the manager's office door that she is only here on Thursday and Friday. Yesterday the manager called me for my son to come to her office to sign one paper on his re-certification. So I knew I was right. I saw her in person and talked to her. Did my friend believe me? Nope. She would repeat what the sign said over and over. I gave up.

In her defense, she did purchase new hearing aids but they are too big for her ears and she can't keep them in. It is a big deal trying to get a refund from the drugstore where she bought them. That is because they don't offer the refund. She has to get it from the company that sells them. As far as I know she still has not gotten her money back. Now if she had bought them from Walmart or Amazon she could have exchanged them for a smaller pair or at least got her money back.

I think it is because that is the old company. Maybe they don't like it that we are getting a new company so don't want to refund anyone their money back.
Last summer the complex where I lived switched to a new company called Hercules.

The old company made it very difficult to get a refund. You had to write to them and send in the old card so they could check the balance which was the only proof that you had. Many people did that and heard nothing in response.

The new company, Hercules, did raise prices but gave each tenant a card with $5.00 loaded to it as an introductory gift.

The new high efficiency washers are great but there is something about the new dryers where clothes become tangled into large wads and don’t dry properly.

I guess nothing is perfect, it has become my best option and I make it work.

Good luck!

Try those balls they have for dryers to help with the tangling

The last few days have been busy for me. As you all know, I am still married to my husband but are separated (not legally). He still lives in our house alone. He had a stroke in 2024 and is still recovering from it. Our house was off the grid and we had our own power system that he built over the years there. Since 1999. Solar and wind. After he had the stroke he made changes because he could not do the firewood for the wood stoves anymore. He is in a wheelchair and he can't really use his right side. He took his truck off the road so he is living without a vehicle and has everything delivered (thank God for Walmart!).

So he signed up for DiSanto Propane to pay on the budget $239. a month for regular deliveries. They changed his propane tank from the smaller ones for cooking fuel to a large one. He put in a large propane heater and a propane on demand water heater. Thought he was all set so ordered a propane generator that is out in the barn and he can turn it on from the house. I think his new refrigerator is run by the solar like our old one was.

The fuel company took out 2 payments out of his bank account this month instead of one. Which he was not expecting. So that was more than his food budget for the month. Not only that, but they would not deliver the propane. He has been out of it since New Year's Eve. They said the driver refuses to drive our road! For 4 real cold days he did not get out of bed because he was so cold. So didn't eat or drink anything. Finally he called his nephew and he ordered firewood for him and he and the wood guy stacked it in the house and on the deck. Got the solar panels cleaned off so they could charge again.

When I called to see how he was doing in this cold weather and he told me that........I was so mad! We used that propane company since we moved there. They came in all types of weather. Now he has the garbage pick up so their truck is coming there. The mailman, UPS, FedX, etc. all come there and have for years. Larry called the office for the aging and they said they could not do a thing about it. So I told Sonny and he went right to the office for the aging and got the ball rolling!

To make a long story short................this coming week DeSanto Propane WILL be delivering it! The girl on the phone at their office kept hanging up on Larry and on the office of the aging. So they called local officials of the 2 towns our house is in and the highway department. That helped a lot. Now he is getting help. I think Larry has a new respect for Sonny now. :) :)

kat,
Your story made me wonder if Larry has applied for HEAP. It is available for people that burn wood as well as more traditional fuels but I’m not clear on how it works.

All the years I lived there I got it for us. Never had to pay for our firewood because they paid for two loads every winter. He does not do that. I mentioned it to him before and he said he didn't want to mess with it.. He is not eligible for most programs because his income is too high (not really but just over the line I think). But for HEAP he is.

Right now though, this has nothing to do with the payment. It is paid for and he has never been behind on the payments to DiSanto.

The sheriff called to check on him last night and told him that he has gotten Social Services to see what he needs. Being a senior citizen and disabled now he must be able to get some type of help. This is hard for him. He is a proud man and was always strong and could do most anything. He fell off our barn roof and I believe he broke his back. He would not go to the ER. The next day using a walker he went out in the paddock and cut a big tree down with my Jeff helping him by splitting it and getting it to the house. Now he has to accept help.

Kat,, can relate my husband has been an active hard working man up till the last couple of years.

The firewood piles that he has cut & sold are becoming smaller piles than we've had.
Caring for his tools, saws, trucks has gotten behind.

The injuries he got last year have been painful.
Appears there is no "quick" fix it for those.

Seems so strange to have him eat breakfast or any meal;; than he heads for the tv.
I had been nagging at him about sitting too long,,legs need exercise.

I see in this apartment building that it is hardest for the men who provided for their families. The ones who worked at jobs and took care of their homes and vehicles. Some gardened. Then they move here and have nothing physical to do. Maybe clean off their cars when it snows. Or drive to the stores. They end up in their recliner and their biggest worry is whether the cable is out and they can't watch television. Seems like us women, can always find things to do. Must be one of the differences between the sexes.
