St. Valentine, a Christian martyr from the 3rd century, is celebrated for his acts of love and compassion, which led to his association with Valentine's Day.

Historical Background

St. Valentine is believed to have been a priest in Rome during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. According to tradition, he was known for performing secret marriages for couples, particularly soldiers who were forbidden to marry. Claudius believed that single men made better soldiers, as they were less distracted by family ties. When Valentine was discovered, he was imprisoned and ultimately martyred for his defiance of the emperor's orders.

I remember as kids we would make a Valentine holder in school and hang it up on the wall. On Valentines Day, the kids would place Valentine cards in their friends holders. The kids would then count how many they got. Of course the most popular got the most. I felt bad for the ones who got none or very little.

I used to have a good friend who was fat. I felt bad for her because she never got a Valentine. I gave her a card one time and wrote secret admirer on it just so she'd get one. She was so excited. When she found out that I was the one who gave it to her, she never spoke to me again. It hurt her feelings because she thought sone guy had given it to her. Years later, I saw her at my 10 year reunion. She had lost weight through the years and was gorgeous. I bet she got a lot of Valentines after that.
