Warning for those who sell on Facebook Market Place

Just the other night it was on the news where several robberies took place in the parking lot of an apartment that is well known in the local area for being a $hithole & not to go there. They ended up arresting three 16-year-olds who were responsible for all of them & found the stolen shoes with a search warrant.

There are a lot of police & sheriff's offices in my area that have dedicated marked parking spots in their lots for doing sales.

I haven't done sales on Facebook & wouldn't ever do anything on Craig's List. I have a few saddles I need to sale & my farrier said he would put flyers up for me at the barns he goes to. Even then I'd meet someone at either that barn (after talking to my farrier) or more than likely at a local LE lot.

Great idea.. I wish we had the same here...,unfortunately we don't have any Police stations left hardly...much less areas where online sales could take place..

There are so many whom have some sort of mental illness that kill or harm others with simply no regard for the consequences.
the thing is you never want these nut jobs to know where you live.

as to the case of the OP video stabbing someone 70 times and I read he also stabbed family dog between the eyes and killed it as well. this person was insane or more likely on drugs or something. It takes Rage to stab someone that many times and not the ability to feel to have no remorse. a pickup sold on marketplace a normal person would assume there would be some issues.

Sadly, mental health is not something that can be measured like a broken bone x-rays show as it heals.
Mental health treatment is like going to a gym... you have to want improvement, you know it will take time and realize it is personal effort that makes the difference. people are lazy they just want a pill to solve crazy.

or.. some individuals are simply rotten individuals.. and shouldn't be given excuses..

I mentioned this kind of thing in a thread where people were talking about FB..
around here, and surrounding areas, people are advised to do the transactions in public places, preferably at police stations..
It's much like the craigslist transactions with similar circumstances. Personally those types of postings are one of the reasons I rarely open FB.

@Nathan, I haven't used eBay during the last five or six years. I thought the sales transactions were safe, as individuals generally (or always?) use PayPal now. A little detail... do you mean by "robbed" that you'd paid for items that you never received?
The two times that I got robbed was as the seller, in both cases with the sale of a laptop. First time I sold and shipped a Macbook, had tracking and USPS insurance. I saw that it had been delivered, shortly after the buyer files a dispute with ebay/Paypal saying he didn't receive it. The buyer gets refunded, I am out $300 + shipping costs. I researched this buyer, he was himself a seller of used Mabooks and had 3 negative feedbacks on ripoff transactions, and eventually was banned. With the 2nd laptop I sold, the imbecile that bought it didn't read the auction description, but said the laptop wasn't "as described". He got refunded and did return the laptop, but it came back broken...

News casts in the Toronto area are asking people to do your transaction at a local bank, if it is a cash deal.
The biggest concern these days around here is counterfeit money and thieves then turn around and resell what ever it is they bought.

A big reason I don't sell on eBay. Things get lost or broken in shipping (or the buyer claims that), the hassle of packing and shipping and I don't understand PayPal - I only deal in cash. I like people to see what they are getting in person, that way they can't gripe about it later.

A year ago last Christmas my sister In law and I sold a bunch of stuff on Facebook Marketplace. We were liquidizing my mother in laws things. We took pictures of all the things we had to sell , wrote up a short description and put the ads up. Almost everything sold in a short amount of time.
It was actually a bit of fun.

I have sold many, many things on FB, but if I get an interested buyer, I always check their FB profile before responding. If everything looks normal (Family outings, hobbies, selfies, etc...), then I will respond. However, if something doesn't make me comfortable, I just don't respond, or tell them I have another buyer. So far, never a problem.

I feel like buying and selling electronics is where you’re most likely to run into scams, after all, people can find so many ways to take advantage of you.

I’ve seen a ton of these scams on YouTube and TikTok. From everything I’ve read, doing a face to face cash deal is the safest way, though you still have to watch out for fake bills.

I have sold many things on marketplace, because it is the only viable alternative, except summer yard sales. Generally the experience has been good, if one can tolerate the bombardment of "is this still available?", "yes", then you don't hear anything further.

I did have an obnoxious review from a non-buyer which lambasted my character because I sold the item before he got there. I can do nothing about the bad review, other than strive to bury it with newer positive ones. Frustrating.
