Are any seniors getting measles booster shots?

I was born before 1957 and had measles (two kinds) in childhood, but I also had mumps in childhood and had it again in college, and I'm pretty sure I had measles again in my 40s (didn't realize it at the time, and my regular doctor didn't think of it and gave me antibiotics, but the infectious disease doctor I went to for Lyme Disease told me at my next appointment that it sounded like I had measles).

Anyway, I was pretty horridly sick for almost a month in my 40s and though you'd think at least I should have strong immunity from that, I'm feeling insecure since my childhood immunity didn't last so maybe my immune cells don't "remember" as long as they should.

I'm wondering if I should get a measles booster just in case. Is anyone else considering it?

Nor me.... but I have had mumps...

I am going to have the shingles vaccination tho' because they say shingles is horribly painful in older people
That would be an interesting question. If you've never had chicken pox, can you be harboring the virus from chicken pox that causes shingles?

Like the others mentioned, talk to your doc. You and him/her are the only ones that can make that decision with any confidence.

I've always understood measles to be extremely contagious. I guess if I were to learn that there was an outbreak in my area I welcome a vaccination or booster to avoid getting ill. Is this one of those childhood ailments that we supposedly can't get a second time?

I just looked at the NHS website.. and it says this....

Do I need the shingles vaccine if I’ve never had chickenpox?

You still need the shingles vaccine if you’ve never had chickenpox. You may have had chickenpox at some point without knowing it. Some people have chickenpox without displaying any of the typical chickenpox symptoms.

when we were children.. and placed in a children's home... while there my 6 year old sister had chickenpox all over her body and me at 9 years old was tasked to put Calamine lotion all over her spots every night and morning... but I didn't catch it.... ...and one of my mothers' favourite memories was getting a letter from me telling her just exactly how many spots my sister had all over her body...lol

Can You Get Shingles If You've Never Had Chickenpox?

No, You Can’t Get Shingles if You’ve Never Had Chickenpox

But if you haven’t been vaccinated, you could get chickenpox from somebody with shingles..

want to try to untangle what so-called experts said here?? LOL!
yes from the NHS website....

Stay away from certain groups of people if you have shingles

You cannot spread shingles to others. But people could catch chickenpox from you if they have not had chickenpox before or have not had the chickenpox vaccine.

This is because shingles is caused by the chickenpox virus.

Try to avoid:

  • anyone who is pregnant and has not had chickenpox before
  • people with a weakened immune system – like someone having chemotherapy
  • babies less than 1 month old

As of today, South Carolina has 933 confirmed cases of measles. I won’t air my opinion on that.
what percentage of the popualtion is that ..and is it all children ?

We were all vaccinated against measles when we were kids, but I read just recently in our media that certain minority factions of the population are not allowing their children to be vaccinated against anything..measles, whooping cough, polio, anything.. and it's causing major problems within those factions ...also in these same groups and amongs the younger indiginous population there has been apparently an increasing amount of Rickets being recorded.. because children are more and more staying indoors and not receiving enough sunshine ... .. not being given sufficient food with Vit D ..or given fresh foods... rather being fed highly processed foods and take-aways....

I plan to get the measles, shingles, RSV, and tetanus vaccines. I've gotten the covid, pneumonia, and flu vaccines already. My doctor told me to wait a couple of weeks between vaccines. Fine with me! That fits right into my procrastination habit. I wait 2 weeks, the car breaks down, and I'm off the hook yet again!

I had chicken pox, mumps, and measles when I was a kid, along with everybody else.

Who is we all? Do you mean people in your country?

I had measles when I was in Kindergarten- approximately a year before a vaccine was available.
Chicken pox two years later- no vaccine around then, either.
I had shingles approx. a year and a half ago.
