$14.25 for a pack of Newport Cigarettes?

I'm thinking that along with the cost of products / food etc employees wages have gone up a ton as well. I know people weren't making 15 plus dollars an hour for working at McDonald's, back in the '60s! Lol So I'm thinking that it pretty much equals out compared to " back in the day ". 😁

Cigarettes killed my mother. There is a reason they are called coffin nails. Rich or poor they are always a tragic mistake. Oh, and by the way, the nicotine in them is addictive.
So sorry about your Mom! 😟 Unfortunately people are still dying from cancer that never smoked a day in their life or was even around it. In my opinion if it wasn't/isn't cigarettes it will be from something else. They blame(d) cigarettes for cancer knowing full well that there's a whole lot of things including the processed foods we eat that they allow on our grocery shelves and have for years, the containers we use that they still allow to be used etc that kill people as well.

As far as cancer is concerned those of us that were diagnosed with cancer in the last several years can be thankful that they have come up with treatment that prolongs our lives. 🙏👍🙏 Unfortunately we are still losing many, including small children, 😭😳 because of cancer and other life-threatening diseases.

Back in the day I was in the Navy. Pay was miserably low but I was able to smoke the brand I liked at the time even with a newborn son.

When the price was raised from 80 cents a carton to $1.20 we could buy 15 jars of baby food for that $1.20.

First of all I would like to say thank you for your service.👍🇺🇸 I'm glad you survived and hopefully survived without injury, unlike so many. 🙏
Yep, and now the pay is higher and people are still smoking the brand they like and raising families. People that I know anyway...
Not as many people smoking for years now, since they believe what they're being told about cigarettes/even second hand cigarette smoke being the cause of cancer.

It's the same here.. only in Pounds which is more than Dollars...

Approx £14 per pack of twenty cigarettes... ( $17.30 US)

I knew about the cost because I read about it in the papers.. but last week I had to collect an item from the customer service desk at the supermarket... the desk also serves as a cigarette Kiosk, and the woman in front of me asked for 2 packs of cigarettes.. and my jaw hit the floor when she was asked for £27..and change..

How can people afford that ?.. It's astonishing !
There is a justifiable reason for the price, a heavy tobacco tax, reason being, the cost of smoker's health care. Smoking costs the NHS in England approximately £1.9 billion to £2.6 billion per year. Based on figures suggesting around 5.8 to 6 million smokers in England, this equates to roughly £300 to £450 per smoker annually in direct healthcare costs, though the wider economic impact is much higher.

in that case why don't they charge £15.00 per pack for chocolate, or cake, or fat laden, sugar laden take away food.... because diabetes costs the NHS aka the tax payer far more than smokers .....
