Is anyone beginning to Prep?

Thats what happened here after Helene.... ATM/ card services went down and it took several days before most places would even take cash.
..and this is precisely what would happen if war was to come to your country.... only on a bigger scale.. so people like you , and your neighbours, and other who have suffered though disasters like Helene or Katrina or Sandy..etc... through your loss and experience,..if anything serious does happen then you will be the ones who will be able to cope best

If an EMP or something should take down the entire grid, how would you pay your bills? No internet, no phone, no postal service, no banks, maybe even no Federal Reserve (in the US). The mortgage company wouldn't be able to foreclose; how would they know you hadn't paid? Same with the insurance companies. And the tax assessor. Are they gonna sue in court? What court? Would the power companies shut off your power? LOLOLOL!!! What power? Kinda funny to think about it, in a sick sort of way.

Bill collectors walking to your house to collect cash? It's uphill all the way here. Maybe steal a horse to ride? An e-bike would die pretty quickly.

When one ponders prepping, ask yourself, "How long can I live with only what I have now and what would that be like?"

there might be no house... ergo no bills !

*shaking my head*

Actually, it's a nurse practitioner. I like this NP; she listens. Filling for a year would not work if insurance is involved or if there is the possibility that those meds would change.
I wasn't criticizing your post 103; just adding to it based on my personal situation.

You pointed out "would not work if insurance is involved." That complicates it for me and probably for most people, since three of the 4 prescriptions I take are fully covered by insurance. And, the doctor requires I get blood work every 6 months to monitor liver function. One RX is a schedule 3 drug, and prescribing requirements are strictly regulated by state and federal laws.

Interesting points to ponder about prescriptions. Next Mexican cruise, I could buy a year's worth of my prescriptions OTC in one of their farmacias.

On the other hand, my prescription meds aren't for life-threatening conditions. In the case of an EMP, local bombing, or other disaster, a statin and thyroid meds would be way down on the list of my concerns.

Hmmm...hadn't thought of that. If a bomb drops here, I would say "they missed their intended target". Isn't there something in a homeowners insurance policy that exempts damage from acts of war?

However, yesterday two fighter jets did fly over, very unusual. I was inside and heard them and a small corner of my brain was kind of waiting for a "boom". The roof guy mentioned it since he saw them fly over.

Same here..if a bomb were to drop here it would because they missed their target... the same thing happened during WW2.. in Glasgow Scotland, where my house was/ and still is is... there was a beautiful grassy boulevard , about 20 feet wide running in the middle the whole 6 miles of the road... , and the German bomber mistook it from above for the Clyde river just 3 miles away where the shipyards were building ships and submarines... and bombed all of the boulevard...

Oh dear.

My ex has been buying stuff a few years ago for fishing. Tents, a thing to heat and a hole in the tent to get the smoke out. He bought a generator to keep his fridge going. Camping cooking stuff with gas. I have that too.

If nobody can pay their rent I don't think they kick everyone out. But even if so, he has tents and an old car. He said we could join. I said my mom needs to join too. She's 90. She has enough food for 1 week for 2 persons and when the food gets delivered there's nothing left. If we visit I go to the grocery store for food. She doesn't even have an extra bag of fries for guests. Just 1 bread, 1 piece of cheese.

I said to my brother that they had to get food and water and a radio etc, but they refuse, so we can all go live in my ex's tent and eat my 4 bags of rice with beans or she goes to the fancy house from my sister with solar panels. Her husband has been prepping for years and also has a generator for the fridge and loads of food and they have a big garden. She wants to start growing vegetables too now.

I appreciate your thoughts, but no. Remember Y2K? (When we changed centuries). Did that then. I've worried too much about everything as it is and my health won't take any more overload.

I liked this line from post #2: "If you want to prep, you would have to have bunker and an extensive armory."

Whatever will be will be. If that's the wrong attitude, so be it.
As a child I remember classroom drills having us hide under a desk in case of a nuclear bomb attack. I think the activities of so called preppers would be about as effective as those recommendations from the fifties. Personally, I know that Duke is going to play North Carolina at 5:30 today, and while I am watching the game I'll be hoping to spot my daughter and her family in the crowd, might even have a snack as well.

I know where my son will be now. 😁

My insurance will only allow three months to be filled at a time so that’s what I get.
Same for us.

Today while walking, my podcast stopped suddenly. A message on the screen said “Your iPhone is Unavailable, Try Again in one Minute.” It returned quickly. In the meantime, it got me thinking about what it would feel like if all communications broke down. I didn’t like the thought.

This kind of gets me to thinking, if we lost communication with loved ones, it would be a worry.
Maybe I need to come up with a plan to meet up at a certain place, or at least leave a message so we'd know the rest were OK.
I live so far out of town we have to pipe in sunlight, and it's a good place to be when stuff goes bad, but would my family be able to make it out here, or would it be better if I tried to get to them?
Stuff to think about before you need to do it.

Since the Cuban missile crises there are probably several tons of books, periodicals, tutorials and government, commercial, special interest and prepper sales marketing brochures and videos.

Bomb shelter company employees know where you are so more than likely they will be your first uninvited guest. EMP will render any electronic device you have completely useless.
Have you calculated the amount of food and liquids and medicine if needed per family member for a projected amount of time you plan to shelter in place? Unfortunately if a family member passes away do you have a contingency plan to prepare and properly contain it away from your family? It's imperative to be aware that history has proven that some individuals believe in personal survival by attrition and I have no viable solution for that perilous situation. No matter how long you think you can survive a limited nuclear conflict or a global extinction level event your purified air will run out and radiation will take it's place.

We prep for short term natural events where power is out for a week or two and stores are closed. I don't see the violence of war coming here in any large amount. An invasion is a non starter, there is no way it could happen. There really isn't much they could do to us on any large scale except random acts of terrorism designed to frighten everyone. That's why it's called terrorism. It only works if people are scared. I refuse to be terrified. I believe the UK is in a similar boat. Iran has other goals.

Their aim is to destroy their Gulf coast neighbors and strangle our oil supplies. That's where their efforts will be aimed. Take out a desert countries water supply such as their desalinization plants and you have virtually destroyed that country They have more than enough drones to accomplish that. There would be oil shortages. The lights would stay on.

If electricity, water and food is cut off for a month or more across the entire country we probably wouldn't survive. You can't prep for that without a bunker full of food and everyone else would be trying to take it from you. I'd hate to see what people would turn into in a situation like that. I don't foresee that happening here in the US on any mass scale because of the war. If we aren't talking nukes that is, and right now they don't have any.

I don't think anyone would give Iran nukes because we would know and retaliate against them too. North Korea knows that, we have repeatedly told them that. I think they got that message long ago. Not sure I want to survive a true nuclear apocalypse but that is not in the cards from this.

In the winter season we are in an active earthquake area, the San Andras fault is about a mile from us. We average 20 earthquakes a week. Most you can't feel but we had a 4.9 this winter that we really felt. Eventually we will be hit hard and that's what we prep for. The local area is prepared for it and most people here are to some degree. People here would band together.

At least the UK has relatively sane leaders at the helm. Unfortunately the US leadership is flawed in far too many ways to effectively be of any use in a major disaster. It would be up to the states to protect their own. We live in a good state and feel confident help would arrive quickly.
