I quit going to get hair cuts and quit shaving years ago

As the cost rose and quality plummeted, I quit going to get hair cuts.

For a brief time there was a barber shop I went to in Lorton VA, owned and staffed entirely by Korean girls, and it was paradise.
Very cheap, quick, and they pampered you with a hot towel and neck rub at the end. Never any spray of water all over you,
never any hair down your collar, respectful, grateful attitude. No pushy attempt to sell you overpriced shampoo, no
expectation of a big tip. Long gone now, probably.

I bought an electric hair cutter, the type they use in the barber shop, not just wimpy trimmer, and it is as simple as combing
your hair to cut your own.

I switched from disposable razors to an electric, and when it wore out, bought the same brand and it immediately broke.
I just grew out a full beard and hack it periodically with scissors.
Name brands mean nothing now due to corporate consolidation and frantic greed. Quality is in the toilet and customer loyalty
is irrelevant, only stock value matters now. A sinking ship for certain.
Even if you are able and willing to invest in quality, it is nowhere to be found, everything is a race to the bottom now.

I did the opposite. I cut mine and my 3 sons hair for years. I just started going to a barber at age 64 as it was getting harder for me to do my own. What I saved over the years cutting all our hair I can afford the luxury now of having it done. I use a small one man barber shop and my barber is a great guy.

I always had it long, so that was just make a ponytail, cut, ready, but now I have some model in it. Shag, very easy to cut. Saw it on youtube. I never paid for a hair dresser for myself. I dyed it the last years, but quit. I now use blonde spray. Lovely cheap and easy.

My sons though always went to a hairdresser. Did that once myself and it looked like a flower pot cut, so I leave that to the professionals. It's not that expensive. 30 euro once in a while and the youngest now shaves it off.

Years past I used to cut my hair myself. When I found out I could retire early my wife asked me if I would consider shaving my head the day after I was officially retired. Why not it couldn't be any worse than the way the hair was receding trying to join up with the pattern bald spot that was increasing in size.

Add to that I couldn't picture myself doing one of those stupid comb overs or looking like one of those clowns that only has hair on the sides of his head.

Found out right away that the Fahrenheit cologne I was using for aftershave was way to strong for all that area to cover. Tried several popular after shaves, all were to strong.

Needed something to use after shaving so out of curiosity I tried my wife's Equate hand sanitizer with aloe. Been using that since it does exactly what I need an after shave to do.

Now if you said that salon was in Herndon, I could say you were going to the same one my hubs and I went to. Great place. Although the salon was staffed heavily with Vietnamese women.
It was in sort of upscale L shaped strip mall with a Giant Grocery store and shops.
What I liked was the genuine respect and gratitude.
Now, kids act like they are doing you a huge favor for pouring coffee and handing it to you.
Mandatory tip, because hey, she NEEDS extra money for a third nose ring and fifth tattoo.

Geeze, man. Listen, I don't like to jump on you on your first day here, but I've been reading the many threads you've started and from your writing have gathered that you seem to have issues with people who are non-white, women or young. Which leaves you with old, white men for company. Are you sure this is the group for you?

I've been cutting my husband's hair, and doing "face and ear maintenance" for him for nearly 30 years.
I used to cut my man’s hair all the time but now he just shaves the whole head . It suites him.

I have long hair and usually cut it myself but I went to the hair dressers and got about 6 inches taken off. It’s still long but not as long.
I’ll grow it to my tailbone again and decide what I want to do with it then.

I cut my own bangs every few weeks and get my hair trimmed at the stylist's, whenever. I've seen your hair, Patty; it's beautiful!

I bought a professional grade clippers during that time nobody likes discussing. When the shop finally reopened, there were so many rules that I said the heck with it and kept doing my own. Each time I got better. The back was hardest - holding a mirror and clipping. Front was a challenge to get even. When I finally went back to the shop I asked how I did. Haircutter said: “I've seen worse” - HA.

I stay clean shaven. I look like an old billy goat otherwise. I found my California driver license from the early 80’s, the last time I had a full beard - young billy goat. It looked awful.

No haircutters will say self cutter is better.

Let it go to gray, so no coloring anymore....I cut it myself for the most part. May go in for a cut once a year. The worse thing I have to deal with now is facial hair, yes, have to shave the chin hair and the upper lip. How horrible!! I did not see that event coming with age.

I'm glad my huzz has found a good barber and that the barber is younger than him so probably he'll never have to worry about finding another one. There's no way I could ever cut his hair for him; I'm terrible at stuff like that. My hairdresser is actually a couple years older than i and I do worry about what will happen when she retires. It won't be immediately since she's in great shape and wants to keep working since she's recently widowed but it's just a matter of time.

I've been cutting my own hair for a few years now. I keep it short and it's become thin so even when I think I did a bad job it's not that noticeable. Or if it is noticeable no one points it out!

I let my natural colour grow in. I had to colour my hair every 10!days otherwise I’d have an obvious grey streak on the top of my head going along my part line. I’m glad I grew it out. My natural hair colour now is light reddish brown and silver. It definitely makes me look older than colouring it but I have no worries about my grey hair sneaking up on me.
