Has the "farmhouse" style run its' course?

We watch a lot of HGTV and several years ago anyone on House Hunters demanded a "farmhouse" style. Two of the most beautiful brick/stone homes in our neighborhood were painted white with dark trim. My next door neighbor went this route, and whenever I left home I thought her garage door was open because it was painted black.

I think there are tasteful ways of updating the exterior of a home without just painting it white/black. The one in wood looks good to me but others, not so much. Plus, you can never go back to the original finish. Any thoughts?

I see some people like white color houses.

I’m not really a fan of trying to achieve a ‘look’, achieving a look seems to be more of a marketing strategy to keep us spending.

IMO it’s always best not to ‘decorate’ but to keep things simple, neat, logical, orderly, etc… and let your personal style or ‘look’ develop naturally.

I’m not enthusiastic about either of the homes pictured but my choice would be the first one.

I also like to watch HGTV. I do like the first picture but not the second one.
The Gaines family inspired a lot people. In Florida, the farmhouse style is seen mainly inside their home. They installed the farmhouse sink, the barn doors, the shiplap, and changed their lighting fixtures.
From what I understand, the farmhouse style trend is over. It became too commercialized. The tones are now changing towards warmer, neutral, softer colours and natural wood. No more white and black!

There's a section of new houses in my town that I really liked, nice new houses about 2000 sq ft, in all different styles. There was one red one that I thought was particularly cute. Just recently they've built three new ones next to the red one -- all three completely black; siding, trim, garage doors, all black. At first I thought they had caught on fire.

#1 is okay, #2 has no appeal at all.

Never been into trendy but I don't mind some of the farmhouse style inside, but I just go with what I like or feel. Always have.

I honestly get tired of seeing all modern white insides and all white kitchens, white, white, white. That seems to be it these days. I told someone that once under a YT video. ALL was white and then they had s**w outside the window too and it was like I could not even differentiate things in it. Pops of color at LEAST please. I mean seriously she had a white toaster, white espresso or whatever machine, white counters, white backsplash, white cabinets, appliances were white... Dreary winter day...

I like various things and styles. I'm more into older than modern or things of interest from the ages. I'd take farmhouse inside though over the white everywhere any day.

I think kitchens should be bright. I used to watch a lot of HGTV but quit TV a long time ago and haven't watched it in awhile. If I'm in a hotel I might put it on. I did learn how much of it is faked (what isn't with TV?) and that was a bit of a turn off but still I like to see a before and after even so.

To me that's not real farmhouse either. Not authentic I guess.

I love even outside farmhouse, not talking about the exterior of the home but vintage washtubs filled with flowers, an old pump, something with a bit of rust on it... That kind of thing.

I had an old stock tank and put it up for sale and my mom said no one is going to buy that. Want to bet? Didn't take a hot minute before it sold. To her things with some rust on them are worth nothing, I showed her otherwise with a number of items lol. It's a "thing". This was a few years back.

Anyhow, I'm going on. I go with what appeals to me.

Personally the exterior of a house that is best is one that doesn't clash with nature... Meaning doesn't clash with the green grass of the yard or fields near it if rural, etc. With a pop of color but the others fitting the colors of nature. Not something that blends in I don't mean, but that fits and stands out but fits.

I do think the picture of the one with the wooden doors, back to those pics, did things a lot more tastefully. I personally think though even that one could use a few more things to make it better. That other one, NO.

Just my opinion. My tastes have changed over the years, and each has their own taste or style. I'm getting to where I used to collect things I loved but now I'm a bit tired of things and am leaning towards simplifying. Haven't done it yet but that's where I'm leaning.

My color preferences have changed over the years too.

I had a home that had the old pink fixtures. Most prob know what I mean. Pedestal sink in the bathroom, the tub was pink as was the toilet... I was younger and all I ever wanted was those things gone but not so easy they were pretty solid items... I eventually did it except for the tub which a curtain covered. That house was sold some time back by me but lo and behold now all those old colors of appliances and bath fixtures, etc. are back IN, retro... The pink, the mint green, the avocado even, the harvest gold... Still though they aren't going to appeal to everyone.

I don't like that at all. they need something to break that color up.

It would be ideal to decorate on Halloween though.

I do like farmhouse, but more original. Updated of course but the bright sunny kitchens, porches, not a big fan of a two story any longer, and actually for decades I haven't been... One bath often and upstairs often in REAL farmhouses... Laundry in the basement, bedrooms upstairs. That's REAL farmhouse when I grew up... And where I grew up... Might be one bedroom, the parents, on the main floor.

But some things, the kitchen was the hub of the home... The porch, also important.

What they call farmhouse now isn't even nearly the same... It's a thing. And I haven't kept up, I don't even know what this black thing is lol.

Does black and white make it a farmhouse? This is my house, and is what I call a farmhouse. Although pedantically speaking, it should be on a farm, and the guy that lives in it should be a farmer, not just a guy that mows the grass.View attachment 499520
I grew up in a farming community and don't recall a single home being black, or black and white. Well maybe white siding and a bit of black trim but not too many of those really either but probably some.

Beautiful place. My last place was rural and I miss it but life and convenience had to be the case so I sold it. Loved the peace and the acreage. Took FOREVER to mow but who cares if one has the time and a nice day... The animals and the nature....

Seems to me most homes around me in new subdivisions are building in this style and mostly
this color. To me it's deceiving to the on-looker how big they actually are inside.
My son here, bought this exact style not quite a year ago.
I personally have never liked cookie cutter neighborhoods. It's confusing when you try to
find a house that looks like every other one for the 1st time.

I had a home that had the old pink fixtures.
I still do, lol. Pink and white tile on walls, pink sink, pink tub. The toilet was replaced with a white one, though. House was built in 1963 and the pink is original. When the reno's were started, I decided to keep it. We had to carefully remove all the tile around the tub, repair water damage in the walls, then replace those tiles back up.

When this was being done, the plumber told me the pink and blue were coming back in style. Sure enough, you can find it at Home Depot and Lowes (or at least you could two years ago). For once, I may be in style.

I posted pictures here but I don't know how to post the link. If interested, you can find them if you do a search for pink and white bathroom.
