Why I don’t like 1000 piece puzzles!

I enjoy puzzles. Had some that were 2,000+ pieces but in this house, there is not enough space. I had to downsize the puzzles to 500 pcs each. Sniff.

When my hubs was going through the cancer treatments, we almost always had a puzzle going on the dining room table. When people would come to visit, they were often uncomfortable or embarrassed, not knowing what to say. They would gravitate to the puzzle and that worked well to decrease any social discomfort.
 
When I was growing up, my sister would occassionally start a 1000 piece puzzle and it would end up being a team effort to complete it over a week's time. My father, my sister, and myself would each take time putting pieces in place until we tired of it.

Eventually my sister would complete it.

I can't imagine doing it as one person and in one sitting.
 
I prefer the 500 piece puzzles with some reasonably different and easily identifiable sections. 750 pieces can be OK but are sometimes frustrating. 1000 piece puzzles are usually frustrating for me.

My wife and I like taking one or two puzzles on cruises and we like to do the puzzles on sea days. We also take them camping in our trailer sometimes. We have one of those mats you can roll up so you can put it away before it's finished. We also have some great piece sorting trays we use and take with us when we're travelling.
 
They can be fun, but I like the puzzles that have lots of different colors in it. Those are very challenging. I used to have a folding card table that the puzzle I was working on was left standing on it and I would work on the puzzle as I got time or just bored. 1000 pieces were enough for me, although I have done 2000 piece puzzles.

Working on puzzles is good for the mind.
 
My father was horrible man... ..as many people on here have heard me tell...

When I was a teen.. someone gave me a jigsaw puzzle, which was completely oval... that was a new style of puzzle back then..

I was not permitted for obvious reasons to complete a puzzle on the table.. so I did it on a suitcase , and worked on it slowly but carefully every night after I came home from work.. then I'd slide it out of sight behind the sofa until the next night...

I was very proud of it... and I was almost finished just a few pieces to put in, and I came home one night.. and the sperm donor had broken it all up ! No reason whatsoever..just spite!

I love puzzles but like a good book, I can't quit and will be at it until the wee hours or done.

I don't do them at home because my two cats would never ever not wreck it. I do them still on occasion though if staying with my mom. Bigger home and despite cats there, it can be controlled easier lol. I miss them actually. They are a great thing in the winters or I'd often do them through those long months.

I can't get on the phone or computer without my cats getting immediately in the way or walking on the keyboard and you name it.

Jigsaw puzzles and cats just don't mix well...

They aren't kittens either and it's not like I never get after them when they are where isn't ideal but it makes no difference. These two are just uhm...

But I do love jigsaw puzzles. I've done all sizes but to get one done since I tend to not quit until I'm falling off the chair a 500 or 750 is perfect. But I've done 2000s etc. One time my sister bought the family a puzzle, it was round and huge and same things in every spot, I can't recall if pieces were the same but you couldn't like pick a color and work on one area, I think it was of a cheetah... The entire thing mostly was the cheetah. It took months of everyone working on it whenever over to my folks...

Lol I don't like those types where they are intentionally challenging, every color the same in the entire puzzle and every piece about the same.

I don't need to conquer that kind of challenge. The thing was also HUGE. 5K pieces maybe at least?

A normal puzzle is good enough for me. if I could keep the cats at bay, I'd have a puzzle to do always.

Did you know the late Queen had a 1000 piece puzzle on a table in her huge foyer style hallways in most of her homes... and they were there simply for people who were passing to add a piece or 2...
 
I believe I had heard that...

That's what my folks kind of did... Anyone would come over it was something to do or walk by and maybe try a few pieces...

I've seen them in hospitals too, like in the room where families can go for coffee and such... Someone starts one waiting maybe on a surgery or to visit or to take time and they leave it out for other families...
 
If my hubby had the chance to get a regular Chess partner I do believe he wouldn't
have switched to 1000 pc puzzles for his downtime hobby.
In a years time now he has completed probably 15 of them, maybe more.
He'd really love to be playing Chess but he's too advanced with in his past history of Chess for most.
I keep telling him, people need to feel they have a chance to win once in awhile at least.
A puzzle can't escape him so here we are. :LOL:

Could he not play Chess online?...I've heard that 's a very popular way to play these days :)

He has and does but finding that few regular players that are at your level evidently is hard.
He likes the human element of sitting at the board and watching his opponent.
He has played tournaments all over the U.S. so he's pretty hard core when it comes to playing.

I understand..yes... if he's a top level player, I'm sure he'd prefer real opponents of the same calibre....
 
I was going to say the same. Chess can be played online and matched to components of one's level.

Decades ago even I bought an electronic chess game that one could set the level and play against.

I really enjoyed chess (haven't played in yrs now though) but didn't have that many people who knew it to play. However, if I did play against someone that took an hour to make a move thinking out everything, it was no THANKS to me... It's a game meant to be played and finished. Thinking out every possible move and countermove. Even if ten minutes, no thanks, to making a move. We aren't planning a real war here and even then you'd have to make decisions more quickly lol.

I guess I get it if one is really good at the game and competes, but I think the timers are good and eliminates those that in playing in life want to take forever to think out their move.

I always found it a very interesting game that really engages the mind but it's still a game in my book.

However, i'd think online there are others that play that feel no one has their prowess at it and some real people to compete with.
