UK bans sale of cigarettes to future generations.

This caught my eye, not sure how I feel about it.

“The UK Parliament has passed the Tobacco and Vapes Bill, officially banning the sale of tobacco products to anyone born on or after January 1, 2009. This legislation, set to take effect in 2027, creates a "smoke-free generation" by permanently raising the legal smoking age by one year annually.”

Bill banning people born after 2008 from buying tobacco clears UK parliament

Yes anyone who is now 18 or younger can no longer buy tobacco products ....however I can't see how this can be workable in the future...
Imagine in 4 years time a 22 year old full beard..goes in to ask to buy cigarettes or vape.... are they going to ask him to show his ID to prove he wasn't born after 2009 ?..I don't think so...

In the US, the taxes collected from the sale of tobacco products and liquor are in the high millions. Even though the sale of tobacco and liquor is prohibited to those under the age of 21 (I think), they will never stop the sale to others. Too much money collected from it.

That’s how it works in the US for tobacco and alcohol sales.

There are always one or two little neighborhood stores that will look the other way to make a sale.

I understand the intent of the law but it just doesn’t seem right to me that you can be old enough to die in service to your country but you can’t choose to have a drink or a smoke.

Agree on this ^ .

It does sound stupid.

I’ve always been baffled why people worry more about my vices than their own. 😉🤭😂
Simple, if you get ill from it someone is paying the bill. No morality here, this is America, it's about the money. On the other hand, the powers that be were more than happy to tax an addictive substance..

BTW the people down the street have a large trailer-size smoker that has says Aunt Bea's Smoker on it, are you missing one?;)

Montana extended the drinking age down to 18 for a year or two back in the 60s, but then changed it back to 21. The Vietnam war may have had something to do with it. I didn't follow the debate, and didn't give it much thought.

When a certain individual was president, states were told they would no longer receive highway funding if they didn't increase it to 21.

Actually it was tied to the individual States getting funding for interstate highway building. Moving the age back up to 21 was the way to get full Federal highway funding for individual States. The Feds passed The Minimum Drinking Age Act in 1984, which would have with held 10 percent of federal funding to States that did NOT raise the legal drinking age to 21. JIMB>

it's the same here..the tobacco tax is HUGE..which is why everyone was shocked when they banned smoking in pubs..because that was a traditional place for smokers to enjoy tobacco.... and removing that would mean millions of pounds less in revenue for the govt

Instead they hiked the price of a pack of twenty cigarettes to a ridiculously high price .... so now depending on the brand...a single pack of cigarettes (just twenty)... costs anywhere between £16.00...and £20....($21.50- $27.00) USD per single PACK...

a carton of cigarettes ( 10 packs of 20) now costs approx £200.00 = $270.00 ) USD

...so it pushed the majority of smokers onto Vaping....

If tobacco products or alcohol were discovered today and had to go thru years of testing I don't believe they would ever be legalized due their addictive nature and long term health consequences. I'd be OK with a total ban on both, but it will never happen, way to much money generated from the sale of both products, and truthfully much money generated for the healthcare industry in treating the affects of both.

I applaud the UK for recognizing and trying to remedy the problem of smoking, hope the legislation holds up.

I don't smoke... and I don't like it if I;m downwind of someone in a pub garden or the street who is smoking, and i get to inhale it..that's horrible...

I was very happy when they banned smoking in all indoor areas many years ago...... but I do think despite all that... that people should have a right to enjoy themselves if it's not harming anyone else.. for example .. in big open outdoor spaces ...

They should apply the same reasoning to sales of alcohol, sugar, white flour and petrol for cars. Oh, also toss in red meat, eggs, and fireworks. In a few decades, their society will then be perfect.

Probably best to ban all animal products and get it over with. And toss in loud music, dancing, and aspirin. You can’t be too careful.

Sir Walter Raleigh is famously credited with introducing and popularising tobacco in England around 1586, bringing it from the Roanoke colony, nowa days, North Carolina. While he did not discover the plant, he made smoking fashionable among the Elizabethan court, largely establishing its use in British society,

In the early days of its introduction to Europe and widespread use, tobacco was considered to have significant health benefits and was widely regarded as a panacea or: cure-all. From the late 16th century through to the 17th century, physicians and herbalists often prescribed tobacco for a vast range of conditions, and it was commonly called the holy herb or God's remedy.

Including social care and productivity losses, the total cost of smoking in England has been estimated at £21.8 billion in recent reports (2024), rising to over £43 billion when broader societal impacts are included.
Cost of Social Care: In addition to health service costs, smoking costs local authorities around £1.2 billion for social care in England.

Hospital Admissions: Smoking-related illnesses cause roughly 500,000 hospital admissions in England each year.
GP Appointments: Smoking accounts for over 100 GP appointments every hour. (In the UK a doctor is referred to as a General Practioner or GP)
Smoking During Pregnancy: Treating smoking-related issues in mothers and babies costs the NHS between £20 million and £87.5 million annually.
Economic Impact: The cost to the public finances (£16.5bn in 2024) is more than double the £6.8bn raised in tobacco tax revenue.

I'm fairly sure 'LOLs' were meant to be funny, not to ridicule..

However- a person is not going to cause a highway accident by driving under the influence of nicotine..
and a person is not going to go through radical personality changes that may cause him/her to become violent simply by ingesting nicotine.

The same cannot be said about alcohol or illegal drugs.

Yes that's what some said on a Dutch forum a year ago or so, me too. Why does that get taxed so insane? And also patches to be able to stop with it. Crazy expensive. But not beer, wine, sugar, fat. They literally did that. We now have a sugar tax, meat tax whatever nonsense tax and everyone just goes to Germany to buy groceries.
