The Appalachian Mountain Range

I loved the Blue Ridge area for exploring and the Smoky Mountains for driving through. Had my breaks go out coming
out of the Allegany Range and that was scary but made it down without incidence. Mountains are my favorite sight seeing
trips. Interesting mysteries in the 2nd. I did have to scroll away from the 2nd vid due to the viewing was distraction to the
stories. Thank you very interesting and informative.

I really enjoy driving through the Appalachian areas. As a kid, I didn't realize the foothills in eastern Ohio are part of those mountains.

This past October we drove through the mountains to get with some friends in North Carolina & the views were as pretty as always. I wish we could have spent more time in the mountain areas.

Thanks for posting the video @nyctrasit5950, I enjoy hearing about local lore.

Me too. I visited Morgantown once. A group of us city folk toured the Kingwood strip mines at night. Bad move, We heard a creepy sound took off like the devil was coming to claim our souls and lucky me I ran right into a tree.

DW and I have hiked the Smoky Mountains, and Blue Ridge, a number of times over the years. There was a comment I read in a book, many years ago, which I can't quote directly any longer but was something like:

The mountains in the west are tall, snow covered, and have fantastic beauty. But much of those mountains are not accessible to regular hikers and one can only admire them from afar. But in the Appalachians, one can point to any of the mountain tops knowing that any of them can be reached.

The two women that were murdered on the Appalachian trail in the 1990s was something I was reading about just a week ago in Bill Bryson's book, A Walk in the Woods. It was mostly about hiking, but devoted about one chapter to the incident while he was passing through the Shenandoah part of the trail. He also listed all the murders that happened along the trail, although there were probably less than a dozen over the years.

My first thought when I saw this thread was that the worst horrors of the Appalachians were man caused. But that should not surprise anyone.

In their youth, the Appalachians rivaled the Himalayans, but erosion has made them one of the lesser mountain ranges of the world. Still, they are beautiful and special as they come to life in the spring and die in a blaze of colors each fall. I live at their foot on the Piedmont side of the Blue Ridge toward the ocean. And I mean at their foot. Four miles from my house begins a steep winding mountain road to the top of the Blue Ridge, and it's a main highway, not some logging road. Yesterday I got caught behind an heavyily loaded18 wheeler going up, which made it a very prolonged trip.

The buildings, but not the big water wheel, are familiar sights in my area. Such buildings, pioneer structures, usually date back as far as the 1920 &'30s. Some have been repaired & maintained and are still used. Some are still to be seen, though in a dilapidated state. But many have been torn down in the last 20 years or so, allowing for new property layouts and modern buildings.

Man, all I have near me is an abandoned old windmill water wheel that spins and screams in the wind now. Doesn't pump water
anymore. I feel cheated.
