I Don't Know Me

I got a call from an unknown number, which I normally wouldn't answer, but I'm expecting a workman (scheduled by our managing agent) to come today. Everybody calls from their cells now, so didn't know if it was him. Anyway, what sounded like a young lady said she was calling to speak with [my name]. I asked who she was and what company she was calling from. She didn't answer either question, but said she was calling about an "important business matter." Then she asked "Do you know [my name]?" I promptly said "No." She apologized for calling the wrong number while it was clear that she felt she did have the right number.

Have you ever gotten a call like that...where the caller is vague? How did you handle it?

i'VE HAD A couple of those type of calls Diva, it sorta
confused me at first, but quickly learned to just
hang up on them.....the one scam call I've not had
yet this spring is the guy who calls about the police and firemans charity fund...that guy really p's me off
he acts/talks as tho we are big buddies or something./.....

I used to get calls from the Policemen's Benevolent Association or something like that, at least once a year for a few years. I've cut them off mid spiel told them I don't donate to cold callers....send me some literature and I'd think about it. I guess they figured out I'm a lost cause or either they don't have my cell phone number yet.

At least you said "no." I'm constantly hearing in news reports, never say "yes" to any unknown caller, as your voice saying "yes" can be used in a recording as consent to something you are not consenting to.

I've also been caught in a situation like yours when I'm expecting a return call on a businesss matter, but do not know what number it may come from. If I'm still not certain after they begin speaking, I just ask "What company are you representing?" If I don't get the right answer, I simply hang up without saying anything else. Yes, it's rude, but nothing will be gained by continuing the conversation, and better safe than sorry.

I read about that long ago.. so whenever I receive those types of calls I always respond with "Who am I speaking to?" and most times they seem so aggravated that they hang up.

Having been a cop, Diva, I can assure you, PBA nor any Police Association never solicit for donations. It is against the law. You did right by hanging up immediately.

Hi. Its George from.......I see your having a major problem with your computer. I'd like to take it over to fix it for you. It will only take a few minutes. If you dont, you will lose everything on the computer.....I've gotten these calls. I laugh & hang up.

Hey, I know that guy, too! He always asks for my husband and I say he's not here. Then he says, oh, that's okay, I can talk to you! No, you can't. He gets annoyed that I won't talk to him.😆

Anyone who knows me, knows I will not answer if I do not recognize the number.
If it is inportant they leave a voice mail, I will call them right back.

I also have repeated offenders on my blocked list. They can not call me.
I do the same with text messages and e-mail. 📧

Sometimes when you answer theses types of calls or e-mails it just verifies information about your account.

Unfortunatly, when I block them, it's usually a bogus number they programmed in and the next day I get another call from the same scammers, it just shows a different number. Some of the numbers that show up are from my area code, but the 3 digit exchange number that appears just after the area code is not a valid exchange for my town.

Yes true, there are a few exceptions for me.
If I see it is my area code, sometimes I just delete it, however if they really want to speak with me they can leave a message.

I’m with you on this. I’ve had those calls and the guy always start in like we’ve just talked yesterday. I haven’t received one lately either.

my standard answer to donation requests is ‘I never make donations through telephone calls’ and hang up.

I've never received a call like that, but I receive texts on a regular basis with vague messages like, "Are you in town?", "I just found your number. Who is this?", "Are you still living in Texas?", etc. None call me by name.

All are vague and from phone numbers I'm not familiar with. I know they are scams, so I just delete and report them as junk.
