How Much to Tip an Uber Driver

Are there any guidelines for tipping an Uber driver? It usually costs less than if you’d taken a taxi. I don’t know if it’s a %.

Recently I took a cab early in the morning, therefore little traffic. If I recall, it was $12 and I gave him $4. The Uber return trip was during a busy time so $16 and I gave him $4. I don’t even know if that’s how much I should tip.
 
I usually can't afford to tip but here recently the app has a glitch and has been charging me a tip I didn't approve when I go to give a star rating so I don't do either now. Depending on how far you were from your destination I do know that very early in the morning when there's few drivers the price is higher. You can give what you want. They usually tell me they're more interested in the star rating.
 
This is something I am afraid of. I do not want to get into a car with someone I do not know. I am sure most of them are good people but I am not willing to take that chance at all.

I will also say I am blessed to have a son and if necessary, he would take off work to drive me to anything. Second option is to hire a driver for all things needed. My SIL had a driver on retainer. She travelled quite a bit for work. He would see her to the airport and pick her up upon her return. She never had to worry, same guy all the time. She just let him know the schedule and he was always there.

Mind you, not everyone has the money to do that but this was a perk of her job, to have a driver when needed. That I could do, same person every time, someone trusted to get you door to door.

Some people do not tip at all.
They usually state 15 to 20% for most tips, so you did good @Jules.

Plus you tip what you can afford.

My Son says I over tip, mostly in restaurants.
I have waitress before, a waitress does way more than just take your order and bring your food.
A waitress does everything but wash dishes and cook. Salad, dessert, prep, and if the dish washer and cook are not available, she may need to do that as well.
 
If their vehicle is clean and they handle my luggage and don’t talk a tin ear on me, I give them 30%. I’m ok with a greeting and an exchange of pleasantries, but after that, it should be up to the customer if they wish to have a conversation.

My tip drops down from there if the vehicle is dirty, or they are a jabber-box, the tip goes down, but I give at least 10%. That’s all completed on the app or hand the Uber cash.

You can pay what you feel you can comfortably afford... of course... but for me.. $4...on $16 trip is too much... if you take that as a percentage... if your trip was $100 would you have paid $25 in tips?

We all get into the habit of tipping Cab drivers ( uber).. but they're already being paid .. as are hairdressers.. both of whom get good salaries yet expect us to tip ... I don't agree with it... but then we in the UK are not a tipping society like the USA
 
When I was using ride sharing I would tip $4-$5. I have since switched back over to taxi cabs. With the popularity of ride sharing, cabs have become cheaper and no intrusive ads or mistakes that Uber makes.
