my son in jail tonight over a kitten

My ex called me about 30 minutes ago. My son works for him as a mechanic. Well it turns out some guy shut a teeny alley cat up in a small toolbox in the shop and my son found it half dead & went around asking if anyone knew who did it . When he found out who did it he proceeded to pound the guy. My ex and 2 of his brothers ran in to pull my son off the guy and find out what happened. The cops came. They hauled off the guy AND my son. My ex said he tried to get them not to arrest my son, but the cop said " I have to. Look what he did to that guys face." The ex said the son was yelling " Check his house he probably has some kid or woman tied up in there!" as they were putting the cuffs on him. So I can't get him out of jail until in the morning. What a mess.

Sorry to hear about your son Sharon, I would have been very angry, but we know that you can't physically assault anyone without paying the consequences. Maybe if he had proof he could have filed animal abuse charges or something. One of life's little lessons here I think. What happened to the kitten, did someone take it to get medical attention, or bring it home with them?

Oh I know. I can't tell you how many times I've told that to the same kid. I thought he'd outgrown that. He hasn't had a fight in a long time. *sigh*. I don't know if it can be proven, but they did cuff the guy and take him to jail too for animal abuse. My daughter has the kitten. She took it to the vet. The vet said it was dehydrated and gave her stuff for it.

So good to hear about the kitten Sharon, your daughter is an angel for taking care of it. I'm an animal lover, so I can see why your son got so angry, but he's got to count to 10 and take a deep breath next time, his future is at stake if he gets put in the slammer sometime for something that ends more seriously. Who knows, the guy could have hit his head on something just the right way, and suddenly murder is involved...never know, better safe than sorry.

I totally agree. Prison is full of people who ruined their lives in a split second. My son isn't single anymore. I imagine his wife is going to give him a nice earful

I'm just being curious, but if you don't mind answering, what state does your son live in?

Texas. He's getting out this morning.
edited to add: I thought they hauled that other guy in for animal abuse, but turns out he had warrants in some other state or something like that.

While your son has some maturing to do (learning to control his temper) it sounds like you raised a good man Blunderwoman! His 'tenderness' gene was working overtime. While you are probably very worried about the situation, I'm sure there's a tiny spark of pride in you that he cares so much. I hope it works out and the crud who abused the kitten has too much on his plate to worry about pressing charges. Fingers crossed for him.

Thank you for the kind words Debby, but he's old enough to know better & I was really hoping to raise a guy that can control himself & not end up in prison someday over something stupid. I love my kid, but he needs to never do something that stupid again.

Here in Pennsylvania, the person that put the kitten in a toolbox would probably have been charged with cruelty to an animal and the act may have been considered as torture. Worse case scenario, the person would have been charged with a first degree misdemeanor and issued a citation, along with a subpoena stating a date and time to appear before a district judge for sentencing. He would not have been jailed. If the defendant pleads guilty or no contest, more than likely, he would be fined about $500.00 + costs and released. No jail time for the first offense. (And depending on the severity of the act.)

Your son being involved in an altercation and if it was in a public place, the arresting officer would have had choices here in PA. He would probably not have been jailed, but issued a subpoena to appear before a district judge for adjudication. Depending on the severity, the judge would have had several options. The arresting officer could have filed a complaint on different charges, ranging from: fighting in public, harassment, disturbing the peace, assault, along with a few other charges. The officer could have charged him with none, one or any number of charges. If the judge sees it as a felony, the price of the fine goes up. The plaintiff could have also filed a complaint and if he was injured to the point whereby, he was in need of medical aide or attention, he could file a lawsuit to recover any loss of wages or out pocket expenses for his medical bills, plus maybe a little for pain and suffering.

Something so simple as being involved in a brawl and being the aggressor may become a very expensive event for the defendant. It is always best to keep in mind that just because a person is doing something that you think he shouldn't be doing never gives the person the right to take the law into his own hands and dish out justice. Just to be clear, I am speaking about incidents such as this, not if someone comes across a woman being raped or someone that is put into a life threatening situation.

I agree about not taking the law into your own hands. I think that other guy had warrants in some other state or something & that's why he got taken in. I misunderstood the first call I got last night.

In my opinion ,your son behaved as badly as the person who put the animal in the toolbox!

In the end, I hope all works out for your son.

That kitten was defenseless. The jerk who did this was not and it seems has a lot of dangerous issues. I hope HE is the one locked up for some time.

Blunderwoman, I agree with you when you say you thought you had taught your son better, but I admit when I see someone abusing an animal or child I loose it myself. I have put a 2x4 up the side of my brother's head for torturing cats, and we were only 7 and 8 at the time.

To this day, abuse to defenseless animals and children brings out the same need to make the abuser take notice.

My son was out the next morning. It was his first offence. He'll be okay. They transferred the other guy to another state I believe for exactly what I don't know, but he was wanted in another state I think. My son's first duty is to his family. His wife is pregnant. The whole thing could have ended very badly for him & I'm a firm believer in due process, not vigilante style behavior. That's what I believe. There are people with destroyed lives sitting in prison because they snapped instead of holding their temper and things went sideways. I had a customer once who beat a guy up with a baseball bat for beating on his sister. He ended up in jail for a long time. While he was in jail his sister went right back out there and found another woman beater.

I'm glad your son is fine.

Hurting a defenselless animal is a dispicable thing.

A friends son beat someones face to a pulp because the other guy called his mom a b'. He paid big time for it.

I am PROUD of your son!!! OK....so maybe the 'pounding' is arguable...blah blah blah....but that was less suffering then what that B-----d did to that poor little kitten!! I am so sorry that your family had to go through this... it will all be OK... you will all get past it... I hope the kitten was taken care of, too. Sending you a big understanding hug!

Karma says the one that did that to the kitten will get his comeuppance.

A thumbs up to your son for defending the defenceless and to your daughter for taking the kitten for medical treatment.

Will your daughter be keeping the kitten now?

HA, good one, GeorgiaXPlant!!!! :D People who set themselves up with Right and Wrong pronouncements, with no compassion or EMPATHY... are in for some very interesting lessons from Life.... Blunderwoman was NOT even saying the Right or Wrong about the incident.... She was upfront and honest...and I for one, am very proud of her. As I know the VAST majority of us are. :love_heart:
