International Women's Day

Is a special day necessary any more?

One fabulous woman who made the lives of women in the U.S. much better was Lindy Boggs.

The Equal Credit Opportunity Act changed lives for women. Before that a woman's husband could walk into a bank and drain her personal bank account. This made it very difficult for abused/battered women to leave and get their own job.

From wikipedia:

When the Banking committee marked up the ECOA, congresswoman Lindy Boggs added the provision banning discrimination due to sex or marital status without informing the other members of the committee beforehand, personally inserting the language on her own and photocopying new versions of the bill. She then told the other committee members, "Knowing the members composing this committee as well as I do, I'm sure it was just an oversight that we didn't have 'sex' or 'marital status' included. I've taken care of that, and I trust it meets with the committee's approval." The committee unanimously approved the bill.

Is a special day necessary any more?

On tv a couple days ago on either an American news or Canadian news program, they were saying that the gender wage parity gap is actually increasing, so I guess society still needs to be reminded that women are people too and deserve (equal) consideration.

There was the sign in the bar that said "we don't serve women. You have to bring your own".
