Lawn Care. It drives me insane!!!

I hate lawns. Water wasters and time.

Get an artificial lawn. Those things actually look very realistic.

I'd also have weeds before I'd use any chemical weed killer.
They are pretty expensive tho. And I had heard that the maintenance was quite high. They get covered in bird poo, etc and you need to clean them to keep them looking good. And there is the run-off to deal with.

But you make an interesting point there. Over here, we dont often have a shortage of water, so when it comes to lawns, that is not a consideration. In fact, we have the opposite. With many people now hard surfacing their garden areas, we have drainage issues which can result in local flooding in some areas.

I love a nice lawn. I have just under two acres that I keep nice. I use no chemicals of any kind whatsoever. Weed control is taken care of by mowing at the proper times. Of course as with all things I do I am not quite conventional. White clover in a lawn is considered a undesirable by most. Not me I love it when the clover is in bloom and the bees are as thick as fleas on a dogs back. I encourage "weed" growth ,Queen Annes Lace, Golden Rod, Milkweed, etc to attract butterflies and birds.I use Hosta, and Myrtle for ground cover I have Native Hawthorn trees that I trim, giving the birds a safe sancturary.. The rest of my acreage is grazing for my cows and hay with a small area left for a cornfield and garden.

My BIL used to mock my dad for his constant nurturing and attention to his beautiful lawn, watering, mowing, fertilizing, upgrading the soil, and weeding. Once my dad passed away, the BIL inherited my dad's deluxe lawnmower and is now completely obsessed with his own lawn, constantly fussing over it and mowing. How funny is that!

If my son wasn't available to mow I'd have to pay one of the neighborhood kids. That would be a pain, son went on vacation for a week. When he got home we were expecting so see giraffes in the backyard the lawn was so overgrown. You know what some people do around here? Instead of a front lawn they have all perennial plants. Stone and mulch in the spaces and it can be beautiful...an example

I'd rather be working outdoors than being stuck in the house all day. We have about 7 acres that need mowed out of the 100 acres we own. I usually do all the trim work with the push mower and weed eater, then hubby mows with a zero turn mower, which really is quick. Never fertilize or water and our grass is beautiful. When the dog days of summer arrive, grass always slows down growing and appears to die off, but it doesn't. Rebounds after a good rain.

fureverywhere...the front lawns in that picture are very attractive!

Well, having just caught up with this topic, I feel rather humbled by the lawn sizes some posters have to manage. That makes my task feel really pretty insignificant.

However, the lawn is slowly responding. There is still a lot of moss in it, but it is better than it was. The feeding has improved the quality too and the patches that were reseeded are now starting to grow, although they are still at the bad haircut stage. Only this morning, I added some more seed in an effort to even things out a little.

And we have just had a heavy shower of rain. The first for several days. That should make things look better too.

I've actually considered something similar for my back lawn as it doesn't get too much sun. Thought about planting a bunch of perennials back there.
