Eeeeeep, What's in the Garage???

Let me explain the house we live in. It was built around the turn of the century. It changed owners and floor plans several times. By the time my in-laws bought it in the 60's calling it a " fixer-upper" was probably a gross understatement. I don't think they did any major maintaining ever.

The garage was a catchall for different family members, friends, old junk...burn it down and start again ya know? But the last few days and the dogs have been going bananas over the back door leading in there. We tried to pry it open with no success. The actual garage door opens but you can't see to the back.

We even brought the dogs to the front on leash. Sophie was ready to tear right in. My son pointed out that was a bad idea. We don't know what "it" is. Groundhogs and possums can hurt a dog badly. Then again if she runs back there and kills something randomly we still have to get in there to dispose of whatever it is.

I'm thinking of borrowing a live trap from the shelter?
 

If you suspect that some critter has taken up residence in what sounds like a junk yard for a garage, and you are afraid to go in and check it out, there's an easy way to get rid of a "guest". Just go to the store and get a gallon jug of cheap ammonia cleaning solution...the stronger the better. Splash the ammonia around liberally inside the garage, then close it up, and leave it set for a couple of days. If something is living in there, it won't take long for it to find its way out....or the ammonia fumes will gas it. At any rate, living in proximity to a pile of trash is not a good idea, and you Will have to clean it out to avoid future problems.

I think a live trap is the best idea!
 
I certainly wouldn't advise ammonia! What a horrendous suggestion! It might be a cat with kittens, or an injured cat. I love Butterfly's suggestion of a big flashlight, which is what I would do if I had a space in my house I couldn't see in (doesn't your garage have an overhead light?).

I also like the live trap suggestions. If you go to the shelter to get one, talk to them; maybe they have an idea what it might be. Do they do Trap-Neuter-Return on feral cats?

If it's a raccoon or something you might find droppings. A cat, probably not, unless it's injured.

Could it be a snake?
 
You do realise that this is where aliens normally shelter when they first arrive on earth? Watch for glowing green lights and rays from the dark skies. Alternatively, put down traps and perform an alien autopsy on whatever you find.

I think I'm also with the 'clean out the garage' brigade! Think of the fun you will have with that and you may find something valuable too. Or a bear! :)
 
Just throw a ball gently into the garage and see if it is returned to you.
