I'd just like to give a 'shout out' to America and your President for signing a new bill into law that actually helps animals and goes towards cutting down (and maybe one day ending???) the testing of toxic chemicals on animals! Well done and I wish my government would take steps like this!

'...Animal rights groups are celebrating President Barack Obama signing a new chemical safety law on Wednesday that includes a groundbreaking condemnation of animal testing. The revised Toxic Substances Control Act, which Obama signed with bipartisan support, had not been updated for more than 20 years. It now includes a provision discouraging the use of chemical testing on vertebrate animals and requiring the Environmental Protection Agency to create and promote a database of alternative testing methods. ......'

Sometimes I get so disheartened at the general state of the world, but every so often I feel like there is a glimmer of hope that a new era is on the horizon! This is one of those moments.

That's good news Debby, I've seen of videos of test animals....very sad to see the torture and abuse. Looking forward to seeing it all end, these animals have been through enough hell.

I often feel like the animals are suffering all over and no one cares but this is a surprise and a very welcome surprise. Woo Hoo!!

Rather than experimenting on innocent animals, perhaps the drug companies could solicit "volunteers" from among the army of career criminals inhabiting our prisons. At least, that way, these thugs might be able to make some positive contribution to society.

DonM, thank you for not saying "use poor people." Read the book on Henrietta Lacks. She was a poor, black woman who--without her knowledge--had cells removed and stored.

They can create virtual furry creatures and test drugs virtually...no more chimps, rabbits, dogs, rats, mice being tortured for real. I know much about Henrietta Lacks...sad story there.

When I started to read your comment Don, I thought you were going to say, 'solicit volunteers from among the army of career criminals in government offices'. Seems to me there's no shortage of those when I listen to and read some news. Could include lobbyists.

My mother in law had some 'problems' and wound up in a psychiatric ward for a bit back in the 50's and that was right around the time that the CIA and the Canadian government was conducting brainwashing tests on patients. My husband was a little boy back then and wound up in a Boys Home for a couple years. My husband and his brother always felt that she was one of those patients and she was never mentally sound after that. So Henrietta likely has lots of company.

'A Montreal woman is seeking to launch a class-action lawsuit more than 50 years after she says she was subjected to controversial psychiatric treatments funded by the Canadian government and the CIA.

Janine Huard, 78, was a patient at McGill University's Allan Memorial Institute when a doctor there was conducting brainwashing experiments.....'
