A warning about fire....

Yesterday, late in the afternoon,a fire broke out in a senior living apartment building here in my town. In fact,it was one of a few places that our Denise (nwlady) inquired about. The fire started on the ground floor and many people on the second floor were trapped. They were beginning to try to escape from windows. The fire department made many rooftop rescues. I was reading the whole thing unfold on a local scanner page (FB) that I belong to. Anyway, when all was said and done, there were 5 people flown out for treatment at higher level hospitals and several more treated at our local hospital Sadly, when all was said and done, firefighters found a woman in the elevator-she had become trapped in there and died. I know all elevators have a warning posted saying In Case of Fire,Use The Stairs. I understand that she may have had no other way out-as I said, there were many people trapped on the 2nd floor. But they did all survive. So sad for this lady.

Ironically,I woke up this morning to the news that a good friend was evacuated from her house this morning at 1:30 am due to a wildfire. Our poor county is having a terrible time with wildfires this past few weeks. An arsonist was caught after the biggest one-over 200 structures were destroyed. No human lives lost but so many horses, goats and other livestock lost. And cats and dogs. So many found that had passed and many, many more still missing. Many people who lost their homes in last year`s horrific fire, lost their homes yet again.

Sorry for such a downer post-just thought it was a good warning about not using the elevator during a fire.

Fire hits a raw nerve here, I didn't want to mention it, but the past 6 days have been tragic in my area, over 100 homes lost in the BlueCut fire...

We where in the mandatory evacuation area, but stayed. However, the smoke was horrendous, and we considered leaving for that issue alone.

My heart goes out to those that lost their homes, but thankfully life goes on; our house burnt in Chatsworth,Calif in 1967 when I was 15. My mother took it hard, but made a comeback in just a couple years.

I lost everything I had due to fire in 1985; I know the stench, and the devastation. I feel for everyone in CA. I wish these fires could be put out but the conditions make for it to keep spreading. I heard one of the fires has been contained and I hope more will be soon. I have family in CA and worry about them.

:blue:Thomas, I am sorry you are so close to the fire now, may be time to leave.

if anyone is in a mandatory evacuation area and does not evacuate, they will die. No one is going to risk their lives to save them when they should have left beforehand.

Watching the news....seemingly every year...and seeing the forest fires in the West, and the floods/hurricanes along the East and Gulf coasts, it makes me happy to live in the Boring Midwest. As this climate continues to change, I can only imagine that these awful events will increase. No place is perfect, and we always have a slight risk of a tornado in this part of the country, but on balance, we have less to worry about from Nature.

Insofar as this nitwit which set one of these California fires, there is No punishment severe enough for such a person...perhaps burning at the stake.
