I heard old timers who worked on big ships like freighters in the 1960s & 70s say it was common to throw trash over board-by the can and bag. The picture is stuff you can see. It is THE microscopic particles you can't see. I've heard warnings about PVCs(poly vinyl chlorides) for decades-on wire, in plastic pipe among other things. You still have problems with individual boaters, especially the tourist type because they don't get to see the effects.

This situation,Major Threat to Sea Life!, has been going on for years and for years what have we done about it?
We cant even clean our own air and you expect them to clean the ocean????

Great to see this bit of good news, but as they said in the piece, we need to do much more. A good first step though. Thanks for sharing this important news. It's the kind of thing many of us miss on the typical network news. Nice in-depth piece.

The oceans are increasingly being filled with trash and waste. The recent pictures of the area around Rio, during the Olympic games, and the huge floating "junkyard" in the north Pacific are prime examples of the visible results of human waste. Plastic takes centuries to break down, and its effects will become an increasing problem.
