Welcome to Autumn

Well, apparently today is officially the start of the Meteorological autumn. Does it seem that way where you are? Yesterday it was indeed quite autumnal here. Coolish temps, breezy and some very heavy autumnal showers throughout the day. In fact, it could have been winter during those!

Yesterday I started my autumn garden tidy up. In recent years, the weather has become very wet in autumn and left me without enough time to finish clearing the garden, trimming shrubs, cutting trees, etc. So, this year I am determined to get things done properly and get the soil dug a little too. My council have also made my clear up more difficult since they have unhelpfully closed the local recycling centres. Each autumn I can expect to fill about 3 builders' bags with clippings, etc and cart these off to my local centre. Now, I will need to try to get this stuff into the domestic recycling collection which is not going to be easy!

Yesterday it was 90 here. Today is much cooler and we are beginning to have windier and rainier weather.

In Scotland it can feel like all 4 seasons during the summer. But we can tell the seasons by what is flowering in our garden. One summer it was so cold for so long that our hedge thought it was autumn and turned into autumn colours.

That is my problem, Ameriscot. The plants this summer have produced a lot of green growth and little flower. So now things are very, very untidy and need to be treated as if it is the end of the season. The problem with this is that if we get a mild sunny spell later, things will treat it like a false srping. But if I don't start the tidy up now, it could get so wet and windy that much of the heavy work will not get done.

We still have lots of flowers, but my husband spends a LOT of time in the garden tidying it up. He never seems to get done though as there is just so much!

The early morning are getting cooler now. Where as before you could go all night with just a light shirt, that's about to end. The middays are also not as hot (low 90's to high 80's) that's about normal for around here. Yes, it's starting to feel like Autumn and I'm looking forward to it.

Good morning to all- Oh, my yes- it appears to be fall here on the Gulf Coast. We are dealing with our first hurricane of the year- Hermine- and it's plotted to come ashore right over our RV and fishcamp down in Florida. For those of you who have never dealt with hurricanes, they re no fun at all.
Lots of rain-lots of wind- see what's left after the storm passes- and the finest weather of the whole year comes right after a hurricane.
When the storm is very bad- like Katrina- there are bodies to recover and dead folks to bury.
And then we get on with our lives.
Yep- it's fall all right.
good day to all-Ed

Hi. I love Autumn. Must be beautiful there. Over here our Autumn doesn't begin until Sept. 22. I love the Autumn season with its colors and aromas!

It's been really hot here still. Hot and hazy and humid near 90 F.

Actually, meteorological autumn begins today in the northern hemisphere and astronomical autumn begins Sept 22.

I love autumn colours!

I know. It's not commonly used in the US. But if you think about, saying winter doesn't start until Dec 21st, or summer June 21st isn't really true in most places. So meteorological makes more sense.

Good luck to those people in Florida. I saw on the weather report last night that you had a hurricane coming. I hope it is not as bad as Katrina was and that you all stay safe.

It was a beautiful day at home, but we had booked tickets for a matinee at the theatre in Aberdeen. It was a decent performance - a 'murder mystery' play from the writers of 'Murder she wrote' and 'Colombo'. It was warm and sunny when we went into the theatre, but cooler when we got out. When we caught the bus home, the heavens opened and there was a short heavy shower. As we headed north, the weather improved and it was still very pleasant at home.

Today has dawned warm and bright with a forecast of a dry weekend. That's good because this is the weekend of the Huntly 'Hirst' - a harvest market / agricultural show. We won't be going this year - we've got a glut of marrows and courgettes to deal with, so it looks like slaving over a hot stove making chutneys and relish.

Our growing season here was so very hot and so dry that gardens didn't do very well at all. And the cooler weather (much appreciated) is beginning much earlier than usual. The evenings feel like late September. I hope we are not in for a terrible winter.

I've been hearing about the approaching bad weather for Florida and up the eastern seaboard; I hope all of you there are not in any danger. Our weather guy today said it will get bad all the way up to New Jersey! Yikes! Everybody stay safe!

Ah but think of all that chutney and how you will enjoy it over Christmas when it is cold and miserable! Worth missing the Hirst for, Capt.

We need a 'proper' winter here, Butterfly. Recent winters have been too mild and the gardens have suffered because of this. If we get a nice sharp, cold spell to kill of bugs and put the plants to sleep for the winter, it will do them some good.

Ossian, you might be right about needing a good frost , but on the other hand, I've seen a lot more small birds this year and I expect the bugs have provided plenty of food for them. When it comes to enjoying chutney, like a good whisky, it needs a long time to mature - 2 or 3 years at least.

I've made shelves under the stairs, and by now it's overflowing with jars...

I enjoy making the lables for the jars.... this is one from last year....

Oh, I did not know it took so long to mature. I suppose it makes sense now I think of it. But that is an impressive collection of chutney you have there. You should sell it online. :) Nice collection of wine too, by the looks of it. I'm assuming from the caps that those were bought, tho?

I think that I have noticed more large birds surviving winter rather than the little ones. The number of pigeons and crows seem continualy to increase while our wee birds remain as they were.

It sure feels like fall here in the mountains. Woke up this morning to temps in the 60's, glowering skies and stiff breezes. Unfortunately, not good for the first day of the Apple Festival, which is the year's biggest event here in town. It hasn't rained yet, but it's coming....
