Mobility scooters and power chairs

I suppose it's a hobby since we have 4 scooters and a small power chair and we really enjoy getting out on nice days and roaming the neighbourhoods and use the travel scooters when visiting malls theme parks, etc.. I've also owned a large power chair and a scooter in the past, that's why I started this topic. I'm interested in learning more about them and perhaps sharing some tips I've learned. I've found the more that I know, the less expensive maintenance and ownership is.

I'm really interested in batteries for mobility equipment because dealers and manufacturers are very secretive about battery types and sizes insisting that they are the only legitimate and exclusive suppliers of batteries for their machines and of course their prices are much much higher than everyone else.

Please share what you know about batteries and and mobility equipment in general. Thanks!

I have no experience with them, I do see them scooting around here in the geezer ghetto. I would search the net to identify the battery size and prices. Look at the scooter manufacturers site to see if it might be listed under specifications. Also check for aftermarket suppliers.

I have two power chairs, one roadgoing and one for pavement (sidewalk) or mall use. The sidewalk one I keep in the car, for shopping. I also have two indoor ones, one upstairs, one downstairs. I also have a mobility scooter which I never use. I really must pass it on!

Firstly remember that many golf buggy batteries may fit in mobility chairs, and in the States these are probably quite readily available.

The other thing to remember is that original fit batteries are usually gel type batteries, this is an international legal requirement for carriage on public transport because of the possibility of spillage. These batteries are necessarily more expensive than liquid ones, and have a shorter life, both finite life and recharge life.

If you fit ordinary car type batteries and are caught on a bus, train or plane you are likely to face Dangerous Cargo penalties.

If you buy your battery on line you can be reasonably sure it's a gel type, or at least safe for public transport because otherwise they would not be permitted to ship it.

"Geezer ghetto", I like that! I suppose our Senior park is also a "geezer ghetto" because most of us are in our 70's and 80's. Several of us do whiz about in our scooters.

I've found that very little information on batteries is available from the machine manufacturers or dealers and for a very good reason; batteries are a major after-market profit center for them.

I've surfed the net and found that a
manufacturer, gruberpowerservices in Phoenix actually gives battery dimensions and has given a size designation (type) for those dimensions. I have to know that in order to make certain that it will fit the battery case. Other necessary descriptive info: AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat); Deep cycle; 12 Volt 50Ah. I think they will probably get my battery business via eBay.
