Is it possible that it's more about the cost to bury a claimed person, because not everyone has the money it takes. Finding out that so many in only one county are part of a system that deals with the dead was surprising to me. The quantity world wide must be a staggering amount.

I've read reports where LA is months behind on autopsies let alone locating next of kin. I can see how an older person especially can wind up with no relatives to claim the body. Being a transient state or area because of weather a lot of the deceased moved to LA for a job or lifestyle. But their family could be on the east coast. If family is already that far apart to begin with I can see it happening. Same for immigrants, tourists and/or homeless. I saw the headline days ago but I didn't see 200 attended the burial until today which was kind of nice.
