Boredom

I was just wondering if anyone gets bored in retirement and what do you actually do to rid yourself of it?

When I get bored I am reminded of some of the laundry I have piling up..lol..and the dusting...etc...

We all get bored from time to time. It is important to recognize it for what it is and
not give in to it. Go for a walk, call a friend, do some task around your place, read
a book, play some games on the computer, do puzzles, exercise or yoga, so many
things to do to keep oneself from getting bored.

I get bored.

I try to keep a list of things that I need or want to do over the next few days and that helps me to keep busy and prevent boredom.

I also collect various things, the hunt for new items, research and sale of a few items helps to fill the time, the downside is more clutter!

I rarely get bored enough to clean, LOL!

I guess you must dislike cleaning more than I. LOL :)

My husband and i clean the house on a daily basis with one full thorough clean once a week so that our house remains clean and tidy all the time. but even after the cleaning and if i have a moments break i get bored and i can't stay in the house for more than three consecutive days before i have the need to go out. Back home it was different i used to go out for my daily walks, i'd use public transport and go to the shopping mall do a little window shopping or go out for lunch, dinner and coffee with friends. All i have here is me and my husband the one daughter that he has is very mean and self centered and treats her father badly. I've tried being civil with her on many occasions if only for my husbands sake but honestly you can only handle so much before you give up and say enough is enough. Aslo there isn't much to do where i live and my husband doesn't have any friends of his own as he's never had the time to make them as he was always on the road driving. I also think that the older you are the harder it is to make friends. I'm normally a very shy person and it takes forever for me to make friends. so it looks like this boredom that i have at the moment won't be going away any time soon.

I'm sorry your daughter is that way. Yes, there does come a time when enough is enough. It takes time to make friends under any circumstances. I used to by more shy. Yes, I agree it gets harder to make friends as we get older but sometimes if we take a little risk and try and make a friend with someone it might turn out okay. There are no guarantees with friends I have found. I hope it won't take as long as you think to make a new friend.

I haven't been bored since I've retired and I haven't nearly caught up on the housework I though would be in order. Like Aunt Bea, I rarely get bored enough to clean. :p Sorry to hear your husband's daughter is so mean and treats her dad badly. Is she living with you?

Even if the weather is blizzard like here by me, I can't imagine staying indoors for 3 days, that would be depressing. Do you have a dog or take any walks outdoors or in a park? I do that daily with my pup either alone or with my husband and it's a pleasant way to kill a couple of hours.

I can understand your situation with your husband being an OTR driver, I don't know if I could handle that, would probably have to go with him, at least shotgun, if I wasn't qualified to drive a big rig.

Hi Ruthanne, The daughter is my husbands, I don't have any children of my own and even though i'd like to have one now with my husband he says it wouldn't be fair for the child he's 59 and i'm 50. I know he's right but hey you just cant shake the maternal urge to actually have one of your own especially when you actually love the person that your with. It's funny what life throws at you.

Hi Seabreeze,

My husband no longer works, when we got married 6 months ago i asked him to stop working and stay home with me as i didn't want to be a stay at home wife all alone in a foreign country. so at the moment we are both retired.

I get bored frequently. My house is always tidy so that is not something I reach for. I do all kind of at home activities, I knit, sew, quilt, cook, build things, strip furniture , garden in a greenhouse etc etc. The boredom comes in when I do one thing for a long time. Today I had to switch from cross stitching dolls house stair carpet to knitting a prayer shawl as I was bored sick with the cross stitch. As soon as I put away the threads and picked up the knitting needles I was no longer bored. For me it is to keep stimulated even on days when my mobility it poor.

On bad weather days in the Winter, it is easy for me to get bored, if I can't spend some time outdoors. So, I keep a list of minor indoor tasks, and on a lousy weather day, I pick one....or, if the roads are clear, we might just go to the casino.

I'm bored that's why I joined this site..been de-cluttering for days. Not so much bored but looking for someone to talk to. I am just having so many problems with inter acting with this particular site. Nothing seems to work for me. Can't get any answers so I assume it's just me. I think I started out on a wrong foot....LOL

Aww, Seeker, you are not on the wrong foot! I am still new here and sometimes I feel like I do not quite fit in. I have been de-cluttering since I retired in May of last year. It is not a fast process! I have to look at everything and it is not easy to just let go of some things. Hang in there kiddo!

Seeker, it took me a couple of months to figure things out, too. And sometimes things don't work exactly the same two times in a row. Please don't give up on us. :rose:

Seeker, If truth be known i think that we all join places like this because we are either bored, alone or find it hard to befriend people. and places like this seem to be the go to place just so that we can keep our sanity.

hey what are the questions that you have maybe we here in this thread can help. and nice to have met you
