I have a picture of me taken in 1940 on the top deck of the Empire State bldg. & another taken in 1946. I was on the torch of the Statue Of Liberty when it was still open 1941.

No... and not on my bucket list. No desire to get close to NYC and the Empire State Bldg. Too much traffic and waaayyyy too many people. No interest in visiting the SOL, either. I understand both have historical significance. The SOL has patriotic significance. Still, don't see what one misses by not visiting either.

Yup, been to both. I used to go company training in Kingston, NY., and liked to go to NYC on Sunday mornings. NYC is nice and quiet on Sunday mornings...until about 1 or 2 PM...when suddenly thousands of people seem to come out of nowhere. I also visited the WTC several times, and it really tore me up when I watched the towers get destroyed on 9/11.

Yes... twice.. Once as an eight year old child... when my Grandmother took me to New York.. and then again as an adult in 2005 for my 55th birthday.

Just a follow up:

The U.S. State of New York has been known by many nicknames, most notably as the Empire State, adopted as late as the 19th century. This nickname has been incorporated into the names of several state buildings and events, and is commonly believed to refer to the state's wealth and resources. However, the origin of the term remains unclear.
There are several theories on the origin of the name. Two of them involve George Washington, one credits aggressive trade routes, and another associates the nickname with New York exceeding Virginia in population. None has been proven. One commonly accepted tale says that, when Washington was given a full map of New York prior to the Battle of New York, he remarked on New York's natural geographic advantages, proclaiming New York the "Seat of an Empire".
The origin of the term has puzzled many historians; as American writer Paul Eldridge put it, "Who was the merry wag who crowned the State ... [as the Empire State]? New York would certainly raise a monument to his memory, but he made his grandiose gesture and vanished forever."[SUP][1][/SUP]

Never have been. I am about 5 hours away from NYC,but have only been there three times. Once for St.Paddies Day parade, and twice to Times Square for New Years Eve.

That's impressive, Lon. I've seen pictures of people climbing up into the torch. Never realized it was that small.

I've never been to either. Do Grand Central Station and Radio City Music Hall count? I've been there. Ha!
