What would you have done (in this situation)?

It occurred to me to pop in here and ask others what you would have done in this situation:

(Please bear in mind this area is weird, dangerous, and getting worse)

A few nights ago, I was kept awake most of the night by outside neighbor noise (nothing new with that); after they all finally shut up and went into their apartments, I thought I could finally get some sleep. Noises started from somewhere inside the building- couldn't determine exactly where it was coming from, first the sounds of pipes clanging, and then the sound of drilling. As the drilling sounded like it was coming from the apartment behind mine, I went into the bathroom and saw one of the tub/shower fixtures pop out. My first thought was the screwball who lives back there was drilling into my apartment.

Not too many years ago, I would've simply walked around the building to find out what the noise was and where it was coming from; these days, I wouldn't dream of going outside late at night.
Didn't think it'd be a good idea to call landlords that late- it was four o'clock in the morning.
So I called the police- and they seemed to think I was flat-out irrational.
What would you have done?

Where I live I would place a call to the building manager and leave a message about the tub/shower fixture but they will not respond until the next day unless the problem is a threat to their property or to the other tenants.

If I truly thought that someone was attempting to enter my apartment through the wall I would call the police.

That's what I thought- that someone was trying to get into my apartment through the wall.

We don't have managers or answering machines- the only way to contact anyone is to directly call or send a text to the landlords.

I bet that was frustrating, Janice ! Years ago - I would have poked around the building & done my own investigating . Now a days , I'm afraid to "get into anybody's business" . People are so touchy , you don't know what to expect. I think you did exactly right . Make a police report and tell the landlords at a decent hour. Also --- take pictures ! Photo evidence goes a long way !

It's the police in this instance who were irrational IMO...anyone, regardless of what their intentions should not be drilling at 4am.... and to have a woman scared witless because the drilling is causing damage in her own home should have been taken very seriously!!

Did the Police speak to the neighbour, did they discover what on earth he was doing drilling at 4am?

You did the right thing when you saw a tub shower fixture pop out. That's serious stuff.

Where I live they would have investigated without any questions. What harm would there be in investigating.?

The officer kinda took it in stride, but the dispatcher was starting to irritate me- acting like I was nuts or making it up.
Turned out it wasn't the neighbor- one of the repair guys was working on the pipes etc. AT FOUR O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING!!!

Like you, Janice, years ago I would have gone out to see what was happening. Nowdays, not a chance -- you just don't know what kind of crazies are doing what, and I have no desire to end up the corpse of the week on the 10 o'clock news. I'd have called the police, too.

Dear God...that would be illegal here unless it was an emergency likely to kill someone
