Hi all!

Got laid off 6 months ago from a job I hated, and I've loved every minute since. They said "budget cuts," but I'm pretty sure it was also age-related. I'm 58 but was the second-highest paid in my field. I was also one of the 5 oldest employees on the payroll.

I've decided to make freelance writing (copywriting) my second career, and I'm doing it in the country. My next door neighbor has cattle-filled pastures on three sides, I can see stars in the sky at night, and the quiet is heavenly. And no more hour-each-way commute to the city. :)

Fortunately I have income while I get my new business off the ground, so life is pretty good. I have a zillion hobbies but no time to play with them at the moment.

Was looking for like-minded souls and came across this forum. I've already read some interesting posts and just wanted to pop in and say hi! Am looking forward to getting to know you!

Thank you for the welcome, hollydolly.

Fortunately we are not anywhere near the storm's reach. We're up close to the Oklahoma state line, about 20 minutes south. All we received in the form of rain was about 20 drops. We did, however receive deluges of rain just a couple of weeks ago which was unusual for August (our tomato plants are actually still green!). It's been a strange summer for us - cool and relatively moist.

I'm very glad you're safe and unharmed... :)

Terry123, I've lived in cities my whole life - this is my first experience of real country living, and I was made for it. We hunt and fish and grow much of our own food.

Had to wrestle a friend's sick calf into the back of our pickup the other day to take it to a different pasture, give it shots, and reunite it with its mother (we check in on the herd whenever the friend goes out of town). All while it was er, losing fluids out the back end. He struggled, but we won, and now he's well. :)

Ken N Tex, yep, just "down the road!" (About 25 minutes.)

Welcome SMC, from down in NW Houston ....(not in the flooded areas)
I love country living, and grew up on a farm, but now live closer to the city.

Enjoy your retirement life, and your second career.

Bonnie, thank you. I hope you and terry123 are both doing well. I can't begin to imagine what Houston is going through. I have family in Katy, but they're all good.
