When did you realize you were getting "old"?

I was a nurse on an active psych. ward. We had an 18 year old patient, who was extremely combative. About six staff were holding him down on the floor till the medication kicked in. I was holding down one of his arms. This was a very strong, well built kid. I had a hard time holding his arm down. I remember a staff looking at me with a "what's wrong with you" look. I realized I was too old to be on the "take down" team. That was hard to take.

I guess I feel old when I mention something that my kids don't know what I'm talking about. My daughter didn't know what a carpet sweeper was. I mentioned having a party line on our phone when I was a kid, again they didn't have a clue. Recently it is when I have to call my daughter to ask her what toys to get the grand kids for Christmas. I actually have to ask her to spell it and when I buy it I have no idea what it is or what you do with it.

When I gave my daughter in law an old percolator because their coffee machine broke down.

She didn't know what it was!

If she breaks the one you gave her let me know and I'll send you a couple of mine to give her......I've got three lightly used plastic Poly Perks sitting in the top of the hall closet that could use a good home. :)

In my early 30's, when my hair started to turn a bit gray, the same thing happened to my maternal grandmother. I've never dyed my hair, now its mostly gray. Sue

When I put my shirt back on at the dermatologist office and said, "I think I got it on 'hind part before'. She said "You did what?"

That's an old expression my mom used to use all the time when something got reversed, but no one uses it anymore.

I was a somewhat young grandmother but when my first grandson had a school assignment to interview an "elderly person", he picked me.

As part of the interview, I had to name 3 things I didn't have as a child that he did.

1- Remote control for the TV (they had been invented, but nobody I knew had one or knew they existed.)

2- A VCR (this tells you how long ago this was)

3- Ummm, I can't remember.

His jaw dropped; "how did you change the channel?" and "How did you watch movies?"

I still laugh about it.

I thought toys have finally gone out of style to make way for electronics! :playful:, But I know what you mean, Ruth.

I see 3 year-olds running around with iphones- what the heck is going on?

I briefly thought I was old after my brain surgery (at 52), but I got over that pretty quickly. Now, at 60, I'm still waiting for that realization. I do consider myself all grown up now, though :)

I began to feel old when I'd wake up in pain somewhere every morning. Stiff back, stiff joints. Can't open a jar before 10:00 am due to arthritis stiffness and or pain. Boredom/complacency about life, like been there, done that. When I was young my body felt great everyday and I would bounce out of bed with energy, excited about the day ahead. It takes me a half hour to drag myself out of bed now and I have to allow for this. I'm still young /old. Boomer - old, but my body doesn't feel as great as it once did.
