Savage But Legal Abuse Of The Elderly

Many elderly adults are abused in their own homes, in relatives’ homes, and in facilities responsible for their care.
It is a tragedy which might happen to any of us, indeed.

Life is a moderately good play with a badly written third act.

This was a very long article...but OMG, I'm both glad yet horrified that I read it...I thought I was reading some Kind of science fiction/ George orwell horror story....

Parks and her recruits have since been indited and face over 200 charges of theft extortion and many other charges..

here's a Video of her appearing in court... I can't find if she's been sentenced tho'...I hope she gets 30 years ...what an absolute piece of work.....lets' see how she likes being dragged out of her home , lose all her belongings, and money...and be kept on anti psychotic drugs in Jail... Honestly I am stunned by this..I've never heard of any such thing ever... I just don't know what to say.

One thing tho'... I believe strongly this story should be circulated to every senior facility or care homes and Doctors' offices, every senior forum online...everywhere in the land to warn people in advance that this could happen again by someone else setting themselves up as ''Guardians.''.

I've never really been afraid of anything but I'll admit that the thought of someday being in a nursing home scares the living crap out of me.

Elder abuse is all to common, and it is a scary possibility for many of us. :(
Not "many of us." but "ALL of us." No matter how much money we have, no matter how well connected to the social and political worlds, when we're shot up with anti-psychotics and inarticulate, there will be no help. The vast majority of people think that we're worthless senile garbage.as it is.

Assigned a public defender? hahahaha! Let's see what you can do with that, lady!

I could hardly believe what I was reading. It reads like a nightmare, and might happen to any of us. If this article weren't in one of most reputable publications in the country, I'd dismiss it as nonsense.

This would not work here in NM. We have VERY strict rules about guardianship and conservatorship for older citizens, and the rule is they MUST BE present at any hearing (unless medical testimony is presented that they are too ill to attend), and all family members must be notified of any such proceedings.

The office I used to work at represented folks both on the side of trying to get a guardianship and those over whom someone (usually family) was trying to get guardianship or conservatorship, and it's a very complex and difficult thing to get done here, especially if the person does not agree, and for good reason. The court even appoints a third party independent counsel to be sure nobody is getting flim-flammed and to oversee any guardianship/conservatorship of older citizens.

Having said that, though, one of those professional guardianship/trust companies here was recently indicted with having embezzled the assets of some of the persons over whom they did have guardianship and I hope they wind up in the 7th ring of hell. I do not trust any of them.
