Credit Adrian Dennis/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Russia’s Olympic team has been barred from the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. The country’s government officials are forbidden to attend, its flag will not be displayed at the opening ceremony and its anthem will not sound.
Any athletes from Russia who receive special dispensation to compete will do so as individuals wearing a neutral uniform, and the official record books will forever show that Russia won zero medals.
That was the punishment issued Tuesday to the proud sports juggernaut that has long used the Olympics as a show of global force but was exposed for systematic doping in previously unfathomable ways. The International Olympic Committee, after completing its own prolonged investigations that reiterated what had been known for more than a year, handed Russia penalties for doping so severe they were without precedent in Olympics history.

It's about time. Not that they're the only ones doing it, but they're the most egregious. They're willing to risk permanent harm to their athletes in order to dope them.

I'm glad they will allow clean individuals to compete at least, with no record of any medals attributed to Russia if won. Some young Russian athletes who trained hard to compete have a chance to do so.

One of the bullet points set down by the IOC states:

"The ROC to reimburse the costs incurred by the IOC on the investigations and to contribute to the establishment of the Independent Testing Authority (ITA) for the total sum of USD 15 million, to build the capacity and integrity of the global anti-doping system."

Hoo boy, think it will be paid?

Probably not! But its a good idea.

I wonder if the ancient Greeks doped their athletes. I'm sure that they tried. I recall a high school coach of some sport (I can't remember what) bragging about having plenty of pep pills, presumably amphetamines. It's a hoary and cherished tradition.
