Tom Petty Dead at 66

You don't have to live like a refugee kept me going during a rough time.

I'm always surprised when skinny people die of cardiac arrest.

RIP, Tom Petty.

Incredible how fast he died... alive and probably feeling relatively well when he went to bed last night, not knowing he wouldn't see another evening...

R.I.P Tom...gone so fast, too soon...

1:35 PM PTSources tell us at 10:30 Monday morning a chaplain was called to Tom’s hospital room. We’re told the family has a do not resuscitate order on Tom. The singer is not expected to live throughout the day, but he’s still clinging to life. A report that the LAPD confirmed the singer’s death is inaccurate — the L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept. handled the emergency.

12:30 PM PT — We’re told after Petty got to the hospital he had no brain activity and a decision was made to pull life support.

I haven't heard many details Ruthanne, if he has no brain activity at all, then I hope he passes. Odd how there's not much about it, I was shocked to hear it on the radio today, kinda confused, didn't hear anything about a heart attack or...?

Heard this last night before going to bed. It is very, very sad. Tom was not that old and he had just finished a tour, I believe. I have heard that he had planned to stop touring after the latest tour. Wanted to spend some time with his grandkids before he got too old. Now that is sad. I assume that as a successful musician, he had missed a lot of time with his own kids while they were growing up. Now he misses his grandkids too.

I enjoyed his music. Another good one gone.

I wonder if doctors tell their families they might have lived longer had they gained weight.

Petty smoked when he was younger, but I seem to recall he gave up the smoking and the drugs some years ago. It's like Mick Jagger said, you can't keep getting up on stage and performing if you don't take good care of yourself. That was badly paraphrased, I'm sure, but that was the point Jagger made when he was asked if he uses drugs.

Even if he did stop, the damage to his heart was already done and maybe not reversible....I'm just guessing though, I don't know.

In the end, both fat and skinny people die all the time...even in their 60's.

I smoked 4+ packs of cigarettes per day until I stopped when I was 41, drank and drugged until I was 39. I'm still going at 75 and all of the tests I've had say I'm very healthy, no sign of heart or lung damage.

I don't like subscribing a cause of death when we haven't the faintest idea what caused it. I didn't follow Petty around so I don't know what he did every day as he got older. Maybe he hung out in the swimming pool and held his breath too long. I don't know.

You're lucky! My mom wasn't so lucky. She quit smoking when she was 40 but died of complications related to her emphysema 2 summers ago. :(

Everybody is different.
