Homemade Chili Mix

I found this recipe for chili seasoning mix and made a batch. The only difference I made was I used Tabasco powder instead of Cayenne and use 1/2 teaspoon instead of 1/4.

Yesterday I made chili with it and it was great, much better than the packaged mixes at the store.

I used two tablespoons per pound of meat. It was quite hot....we like it that way.

Thank you for that. I found that cayenne pepper is much hotter than any other spice I use in cooking.

I will try the Tabasco powder because I like spicy chili, but not too spicy that it takes away the taste of the chili.

On a side note. I noticed at a Finn restaurant where they serve hot chili, that they offer a little side dish of sour cream to add to your chili if you want to tone it down.

I tried it. I works really well.

Cayenne and Tabasco are pretty much equal on the heat scale. I just happen to grow Tabasco peppers and make the powder and also Tabasco sauce.

I have used sour cream on chili, my wife puts shredded cheddar on her chili. I usually prefer mine without adding anything.

rkunsaw using a seasoning mix seems so much easier than bringing out all the spices and measuring each one. I just made a batch of chili and posted it also. It took a good part of the day to make.. My problem would be getting the heat from the spices just right. My family does not like hot food. Nice that you grow your own peppers. I love to be able to just reach in my cabinet or freezer for the herbs and spices I grow and when I see the price of them in the food store during the winter it gives me great satisfaction knowing I have them tucked away at home.

I used to make chili from scratch like that but lately I've been using those mix packets to save time in the kitchen. I was happy when I discovered that I could make my own mix. And it can be customized to your own tastes.
