Cremation remains - keep them whole or divvy them up ?

We scattered my sister in laws ashes in Lake Michigan which is a big no no . Everyone in authority I asked about doing it .... told me it's illegal, but they'll
"look the other way" .

I have to say, I have wondered why on earth it is illegal to dispose of a small box of ashes on a huge body of water, or anywhere else for that matter. They will be scattered by the winds and/or waves, all of it very natural. I wonder why anyone cares.

I never thought about it until i read a book about Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Although the book was fiction, the author either worked or still works in the park. She describes how people don't want to touch the ashes, so they throw the whole box or bag or whatever into the park's streams and clog them. I'm sure eejits do the same thing in all the places you might consider having your ashes scattered.

Sometimes what seems like a nonsensical law comes out of the fact that most people have absolutely no walking around sense.
