My all time favorite movie actor, Gene Hackman is 88 today. I've seen most of his movies, some a couple of times
As with most great actors,he's appeared in a couple of clunkers along his varied career. He either took the role because he needed the money/the premise looked good on paper,e.g."Loose Cannons' 90 with Dan Aykroyd ,they play D.C. cops, terrible movie.
My favorite is'Hoosiers' '86,he plays washed up college basketball coach,Norman Dale, who is hired to coach a small town Indiana high school basketball team in the 50's.He molds the team in his own way, they go to the state championship and redeems himself in the process.I never get tired of watching this movie.
A few other favorites are:
"Mississippi Burning' '88
"The Package' 89
"Class Action'91
"The Replacements' 00
He was very funny in a cameo role as the blind hermit in Mel Brooks movie'Young Frankenstein'74
Gene has won 2 Academy awards:
Best Actor'The French Connection' '71
Best supp actor'"Unforgiven' '92
He has co-written 3 books with author,Daniel Lenihan
"Wake of the Predido''99
Justice for None' '04
"Escape from Andersenville:A Novel of the Civil War' '08
Gene retired from acting in 2004
Yrs ago,he was the voice of United Airlines commercials Sue

And you left out CRIMSON TIDE? (1995)

Probably the most tense cold war drama ever made, with Hackman as skipper of the Nuclear Sub "Alabama", and Denzel Washington as his Executive Officer.

You better rent it!

Happy Birthday Mr Hackman! Gene Hackman is one of my favorites too. He plays good guys and bad guys with equal talent. Even when he is not in many scenes he steals the ones he is in. I especially liked him in two movies made from John Grisham books: The Firm and Runaway Jury. And I admit I fell in love with him in The Poseidon Adventure.
