Recently I made a short trip to town (15 miles each way) and forgot to take my cell phone. I started to think what would happen if I had car trouble or something and needed to call someone? If I had to borrow someone's phone I do not have anyone's phone number!! Just about everyone I know has a cell and no land line!! Their numbers are on my contacts list and I don't know any of them!! No phone book or 411 would help!!

When I got back home, I took a piece of paper ( calling card size) and wrote down important numbers and put it in my wallet. This way if I forget my cell or if the battery was dead at least I have numbers to call.

Would you have the same problem??
 

No, I know my son and daughter's phone numbers by heart and I would call them and have them call anyone I needed called.

What would you do though with all those numbers that you wrote down and you were in an isolated area with no phones within walking distance?

Of course there could also be no service even if you did have your cell phone. :)

Ive not encountered too many areas where that was the case but my driving is mostly city.

I have assorted numbers, friends neighbors family written down..

We're with you. This cell phone nonsense is one of the best examples of what could happen when your personal piece of technology doesn't work. When we travel, we do a great deal of planning ahead of time (notes on what to do, public trans), and write all kinds of notes (printed on a PC) that we carry around. We don't want to count on carrying all our notes on a device. Yes, pen and paper (or printed paper) still has it's uses.

Yup

But, there was a time I couldn't even call home if I did leave without it
50 mi to town had been a concern
It disgusts me to be strapped to that device, but along with my GP-100, I don't leave home without it

I'd be in the same boat. I don't have a cell phone. That's a great idea of writing down phone numbers. I think I'll do that today .Thanks for the idea !

I did that a few years ago...when pay phones disappeared. I have a list of about 20 numbers...family, etc., that I keep in my wallet, and always try to take my basic Tracfone with us whenever we go anywhere. I hope to never need to make any emergency calls...but one never knows.
 
I am in the same boat. I know no numbers any more. When I am asked for my number I have to look at my phone.

I am a big proponent of never not having my phone on my person.

ANECDOTE ALERT: MY brother was salvaging metal,(scrapping), from a burnt barn. A friend drove by in the morning on his way to work and saw his truck on site. Over eight hours later the same guy coming home saw Jeff's truck still sitting in the same place, thinking it was strange he stopped to check. He found him pinned under a concrete wall that had fallen on him.
Jeff was in the hospital in bad shape with bruised organs and nasty discharges oozing from his body for close to a month. He had been under that wall for close to six hours.

He told me that while he was laying there waiting to die, he could see his cell phone fifty feet away from him on the dash of his truck.

Take what you want from this. My phone is always in my pocket!
 
i can remember all my important numbers---however i do carry a file card with the numbers on it in case i have a brain freeze----also the number of a tow truck
 
Great idea!

I would be in the same boat without my cell phone.

I carry a list of all my meds in my wallet but I never thought about a list of emergency contacts.
 
Absolutely. I just saw something else about how we so depend on our cell phones that most of us don't know our contacts' phone numbers by heart. I couldn't even remember my grandson's number if I had to. But I know his dad's (my son) and his mom (my DIL's). I know a couple of others...my husband, my sister's home number and that's it. That's a smart thing you did Ken. I think there's a few numbers I should do that with.
 
I can still remember my best friends number back when we were in grade school but sometimes now have look at my phone to recall what my current number is.
 
Good idea Ken, I don't know any numbers either.

I do have a recovery service number in my car
though, it's been there for years.

I think that's a good idea to the OP. I should do that. Every once in awhile I take my emergency cell phone out of my purse and forget it. My car has been problematic lately and I would need to know some numbers to call if I forget it again.
 
You can get a LOT of numbers on a small piece of paper using a tiny font and a laser printer. But then, heaven help you if you forget your glasses.

Side note: I found out the hard way that doing a backup on your phone does NOT back up your text messages. But there are free apps that do it.
